What is your favorite film written/directed by Hayao Miyazaki, and why?
Although I think Spirited Away is Miyazaki's best film, Nausicaä will always be my favorite. It was the first Miyazaki film I ever saw, and it completely changed the way I thought about animated film and Japanimation (as it was called in those days). That film also has some of the most memorable music of all his films, as I was reminded when a local classical radio station recently played a suite of songs from the film. I recognized the melodies straightaway, even though I haven't seen the film in years.

It's a tossup between Kiki's Delivery Service and Nausicaa, but I think Nausicaa wins out. Just.

Spirited Away for me. The closest anyone has come to writing a new Alice In Wonderland.
Tell you what, though....Grave Of The Fireflies is even better but man, not one to stick on unless I want a weepie!

Another vote for Nausicaä. There are two scenes that always get me. {Spoiler}When she confronts the murderers of her father and demolishes them, but has to stand down because Lord Yupa persuades her that the people of the Valley will be butchered if they resist at this juncture. It's not a value you find often in American cinema, where naked defiance is presented as the best and only ethical response.
and The God Warrior's attack sequence. I've only ever seen it on a television screen, but even there it manages to convey the horrifying scale of the forces involved. It must be something else on the big screen.
