Which movies did you think would turn out to be not very good or amazing, but you were pleasantly surprised by/disappointed in?
I thought The LEGO Movie was an awful idea when it was announced because it's a construction toy, there were no characters to base a film around. Turned out to be an extremely creative animated movie with plenty of heart.
I saw the idea of a Jumanji 2 as unnecessary, but Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle turned out to be a surprisingly fun movie.
What about you?

I went into Ghostbusters 2016 cautiously optimistic and came out never wanting to speak about the film ever again. It was an embarrassment.

Yeah, The LEGO Movie could easily have been a cynical cash-grab designed to get people to buy LEGO sets but I'm glad it turned out to be like Toy Story, in that it was a well-crafted film that just happened to be told with toys. Personally I loved Ghostbusters 2016, but then I never had any doubts about it anyway and I knew from the trailers it was the Miranda-style of humour I enjoy.

Last Jedi, never been so underwhelmed, disappointed & furious leaving the cinema, been a fan 35 yrs & never thought the day would come i hated a Star Wars movie but i loathe & detest Last Jedi.
Mad Max Fury Road, another overhyped load of c..p Tom Hardy grunts through half the picture, there's no plot & the action scenes aren't a patch on Mad Max 2 which was made in 1981.

Wall.E I went into with high expectations but I came away very disappointed. The first twenty minutes were great but I felt like finding out where the humans were after the planet became inhabitable ruined the mystery of what happened to them.
Charlie And The Chocolate Factory was a remake I had high hopes for with the casting of Johnny Depp, but it sucked all life out of the iconic Roald Dahl story and Johnny Depp was more like Michael Jackson than Willy Wonka.

Weirdly enough to say... Deadpool. It's not my kind of humour, nor is it the kind of style I'd typically go in for. Coming out of the film, it felt like I hadn't laughed like that in aeons. It was really, really marvellous.
(The second isn't a film, but the 1980s revival of The Twilight Zone is actually pretty amazing. Particularly when you've got writers like Harlan Ellison and directors like William Friedkin helming it.)

Not a movie, but the musical version of The Addams Family is a surprisingly good show with some fun music, though trumpet players beware, it's a killer on the upper lip with several sections above the staff. I know from experience

Wonder Woman was one movie that I guess you could say I came out surprised with how good it was - I was pretty cautious going in considering how much I disliked Man of Steel, Batman v. Superman, and Suicide Squad. Speaking of which, Suicide Squad was a curious situation where I left the theater with a mixed but slightly pleasant experience, but the more I thought about it afterward the less I liked it. Man of Steel was just really frustrating experience and going into Batman v. Superman, I knew what I was getting myself into having heard some of the reviews, but it still managed to frustrate and disappoint.
Further back than that, I remember going into Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull with an open mind, then coming out of the theatre thinking a guy I overhead as I was leaving summed it up pretty well when he said, "well that was a waste of my money."
I was also disappointed with the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - at the time, at least. Since then it's really grown on me - and it definitely helps that it has an absolutely fantastic score (just like the rest of the films, I might add) - but there are some changes the film made to the source material that I think could have been better.

I still to this day have no idea how Spielberg & Lucas messed up Indy 4 so badly, the ending lacks spectacle, the plots wafer thin it's terrible.

Disappointed with: - History of the World, Part I. Friends of mine had raved about this Mel Brooks movie for years before I saw it, but for me it was the least funny of all his films. Only the Inquisition musical number, and the few Last Supper jokes had any merit. The rest was trite. Or tripe. Possibly both.
- Peter Jackson's Hobbit films did not live up to the promise of The Lord of the Rings, and the third one was absolutely dreadful.
- Every Star Wars movie since Return of the Jedi (except Rogue One). So much so that I haven't bothered to see The Last Jedi.
