I remember the announcement of Sylvester being made on BP very clearly. I too recorded it to add onto one of my special 'clips tape' that were crammed with other DW news items, DW actors on chat shows, magazine programmes and all manner of obscure appearances. You had to grab them while you could back in the day, nothing on-tap like it is now. Still, it was a good grounding to make our generation grateful for what we have today and not to be complacent about it. I remember thinking I was indifferent with the choice of McCoy but I think that was mainly down to the rotten treatment of Colin by the BBC leaving a stink in the air. We didn't know the ins & outs of what went on but we did know that Colin had been fired but that was enough foul the air. If McCoy hadn't have recently done the 'Eureka!' series in which he was very good, I probably would've ranted at the screen shouting and wondering what the hell is this wally off TISWAS doing in the TARDIS!?
Blimey, all those years ago. A strange time to be a Doctor Who fan. Colin gone acrimoniously, Eric Saward gone acrimoniously ... and we weren't privy to the rest of the disagreements going on behind the scenes until years later: JNT was quoted as being 'delighted' to be staying on as producer. And here's Sylvester looking suitably bewildered in the Blue Peter studio. I remember it well and thinking that whilst it was sad to see the Sixth Doctor go (and just how would they do the regeneration without Colin), the Seventh Doctor looked like he mihgt be quite fun.
Terrific video clips. Just ... what the blue blazes is going on with Colin's hair at the end?!
29th October. The most important date in all of Doctor Who history. On this date in 1966 the Doctor regenerated for the first time & a legend was born, in the final episode of The Tenth Planet which started at 17:50.
