On 24 January 1970, Spearhead from Space concluded with an audience of 8.1 million and an AI of 57. Good solid numbers for the new Doctor.
In 1976 it was the final episode of Brain of Morbius. Yes, the timeless doctors are 48 today. The audience was similar to the previous week at 10.2 million.
Finally, in 1981 Warriors Gate concluded with an audience of 7.8 million and an AI of 58, meaning over a million of the new viewers who'd tuned in the previous week had decided to keep coming back for more. 43 years today since Lalla Ward last graced our screens as the noblest Romana of them all. 43 years!

60 years ago today, The Ordeal, episode 6 of The Daleks, saw another jump in viewers to 10.4 million, with an AI of 63.
In 1969, a comparatively poor 6.6 million tuned in for episode 1 of The Seeds of Death with an AI of 57. Down almost two million from three weeks previously, would this story bring back the audience that the Krotons had squandered?
In 1975, episode 1 of Ark in Space rallied slightly after the previous disappointing week, to 9.4 million viewers.
In 1982, episode 3 of Four to Doomsday was holding steady on 8.9 million as was episode 3 of Snakedance the following year, with 6.6 million and an AI of 67. Season 20 was developing a distinct pattern of Tuesday episodes having about a million fewer viewers than Wednesday ones.

If I remember correctly.

I'm still sulking a tiny bit that Jo Martin didn't then also become the next Doctor rather than only a former Doctor. Especially now we know the Doctor can revisit a past face! A brilliant incarnation.

Double whammy : 52nd anniversary of 3rd Doctor "The Curse Of Peladon" and 49th Anniversary of 4th Doctor "The Robots Of Death". 'Hamlet with Aliens' and 'Murder on the Sandminer Express' both showing that, with the right script and production, all-studio stories can be some of the best!
(It's "only" 47 years since 'Robots' not 49. I want those two years please! )
