I have been thinking a lot about whether or not actors and their dark side should effect the enjoyment of their work and thought that this would be an conversation worth having here.

So for example, Kevin Spacey. If you don't know, he has been accused of raping actor Anthony Rapp when he was underage, and not only did not deny it but used the opportunity to come out as gay. Now this situation is appalling and what really gets me is the last part, but I digress. The thing that gets me though is that I enjoy the work he has done. A really good example is Baby Driver. I love it, probably my favourite movie of 2017, yet Kevin Spacey has a medium role with a large presence. Should I not be able to still enjoy the movie. I think so, and that is for two reasons. One is that I think that we should separate the art from the artist in that we should be able to enjoy what has been created independent of the real life happenings. Secondly, and most important I feel, is that by discarding these works, we ignore all the amazing work done by great people. Should Edgar Wright be punished for Kevin Spacey's actions?

What actors and actresses, performers and presenters get up to in their real life has no impact on my enjoyment of their professional work. Only their professional work will make me switch off if they fail to hit the mark with me.

Weird to start this thread now?
Anyway. It has no bearing whatsoever on the work for me. Oh & it wouldn't be just Edgar Wright being punished for Spacey's actions but everyone involved in the film.

Spacey's actions were so repugnant that it's not just whether it taints what we have, but what we're getting - fired from House Of Cards, replaced by Christopher Plummer in All The Money In The World, that decision has been taken out of our hands. Ditto Jeffrey Tambor who has been fired from Transparent. So it's really hard to not be affected - who is going to watch Season 6 of House Of Cards and not think of Spacey at all?
Spacey's been one of my favourite since I was a young teen and he blew my mind in Usual Suspects and Se7en. I loved him in Baby Driver just last summer. When I think of those and others, I don't find them tainted in my mind by his presence though I appreciate the very sight of him would affect others. I'd be lying if I said I would consider not watching them in the future. He wouldn't be the only artist hampered by, say, taking his movies off shelves.
Taking Weinstein's productions out of circulation - to use another example - would mean we throw away half the indie breakthrough movies of the past 25 years including Scorsese, Tarantino and Soderberghs. The toothpaste is out the tube for these guys - they can and will be tossed asunder now but their best work will still abide albeit with an asterisk next to it.
