Ok so this isn't about lists(No lists never a list) But which Doctor's tales tend to be your favourite and why.
And also do you have a Doctor that continually surprises you when you see how many adventures of theirs ypu own?
So I LOVE Peter Davison but my favourite Big Finish Doctor is THE Big Finish Doctor, Paul McGann. Although I love the depth of all the other eras Paul's era is so wonderfully diverse and eclectic. I am a huge fan of Charley and my first ever BF purchase was her final stories. But between Lucy and Charley, Mary, and my beloved Helen I always keep updated on my Wall of Paul. Also, although every Doctor is a hero to us queer folk, I feel a kinship with the 8th. Izzy and Helen are both lesbians like myself so in a lpt of ways I may feel like The 8th Doctor might understand me a bit more. But that's a minor aside.
When Doctor Whottaker took off her hood I thought for the first time sinxe 1982-3: "I could be the Doctor!" And I would be most like McGann with his passion, his love for books, his care for everything from us odd humans to spending 600 years with sentient jellyfish. He's not perfect, he even has Hartnell moments and barely liked Lucy when he first met her. He of course grew to love her like the strong loyal companion she became but The first couple of adventures and even them separating was really a delight to listen to. In many ways I love the 8th Doctor because as beautiful and wonderful as he is he still has a lot of flaws.
That brings me to the Doctor who surprises me. Colin Baker. Now when Peter Davison died in Caves Colin scared the @#&$ out of me. I was very young perhaps as young as 5 and just remember screaming "Who the hell is that? What happened?!" My mum matter of factly said "Well he has regenerated" and I said something like "Well can he go back? I don't like him he scarez me!"
Now as even a ypung adult I know that's just a silly little girl's reaction and should have no bearing on hpe I see him. And as an adult I have carried a unique lesson with me which not only has me likely putting Sixie in a more forgiving light but in general not writing off anyone or anything on the basis of first impressions.(In an odd way Colin Baker scaring the crap out of me has had a lifelong positive effect o my whole life!)
But aside from all that Colin continually surprises me. Regardless of any foolish lingering childhood silliness his adventures are some of the most delightful and entertaining adventures I listen to. I bought the sixth Doctor collection (100-Forgotten Blue Planet) and was just awestruck by his compassion. Those plays have completely rewritten how I perceive him in his telly serials. He never entirely trusts Charley because he knows she's hiding something from him and yet he lets himself care about her and fights for her just as strongly as he would for Peri. Although Colin is rarely as prickly on Audio as he was seen in his first season of telly you start to understand why.
He continually surprises me in audio and unlike others I don't think he's just become a cuddly Doctor he's put quite a bit of depth behind his brusque and prickly manner.
I've also become a huge Peri fan as BF has worked very hard in expanding her just as much as her Doctor. And Nicola is amazing and very kind.
So that's enough from me then let someone else be long-winded about their BF favourite.

I can see thethirddoctor’s point. It’s in the tv section and the question posed doesn’t bring up big finish audio. Then there is fantasticalice bringing up Jodie Whitaker. Paz, I think you’re are being a bit rude.

Getting back on topic...
My favourite Big Finish Doctor is Colin Baker and that in itself is a big surprise, as I disliked his TV era BIG TIME. Paul McGann surprised me too with his excellent performances on audio - which are still some of my favourite BF audios - but the Eighth Doctor had a blank canvass and nothing to redeem after only one TV appearance, so Colin's achievement is greater in my eyes.

7th ( I loved Battlefield and Frenric since I was 7-8 years old I love the game planning and the companion dynamic with Ace and some of the speeches "Sugar" from Remembrance "Take a Life" and "the need for sadness" from Happiness Patrol and of course the last 2 big ones from Survival.)

I always think Eccleston did the role justice but I'm surprised and delighted his take inspired a new generation of fans.

A Doctor that surprised me was the 3rd Doctor. I didn't see him growing up, like the 4th Doctor ( my favourite). The first time I saw him was in the special BBC did for each doctor in 2013. I did not think I would like his era much since he was stuck on Earth for a lot of it, and couldn't travel in time as much either. The clips they chose made him seem condescending (which actually you might be if you were that superior). Well it turns out I liked him from the beginning in Spearhead from Space when he hides from UNIT and is in the shower singing. He is always trying to talk to other beings if possible and only uses his martial arts as defence if necessary. He is a gentleman and is polite and sophisticated. The relationships between him and the other characters make that era great. I got very attatched to him and was sad when I finally got to the end of Planet of the Spiders.

I was never exactly enamoured by fiver on TV, but BF has turned him into my favourite (with the obvious exception of the ever entertaining Tombo).
Conversely, the seventh Doctor was a favourite on TV (see above for the exception) but on audio there’s something a bit meh going on.

From TV my favorite is the Fourth Doctor, and both Hartnell and Capaldi's Doctors surprised me by being much more likable than my first impressions of them made them out to be.
On audio my favorite is also the Fourth Doctor, and Tennant surprised me by being able to be just as Doctor-like on audio as on TV even without benefit of facial expressions.

I always struggle with having a favourite. One and Six tend to be up there if we're talking across all walks of storytelling. On audio though...
The Big Finish Fifth Doctor always surprises me. He's one of the incarnations I keep a very close eye on. Particularly after Loups-Garoux and Winter for the Adept. Writers from all over the place took a very plain, open-faced character from television and, rather than completely recharacterising him, added an entirely new dimension to him. The man with the youngest face, but the wisest eyes. Who keeps rising up again and again despite the fairly high body count that clutters his well-meaning feet. He's benefitted enormously from extrapolations from Androzani, audio!Five is the definitive version for me.
Sixie's an absolute powerhouse on audio, I don't think there's ever been a story where Colin Baker isn't putting in 100% into his performance. With his character development and story arc, he's the most interesting to me. The most pragmatic and passionate of incarnations, someone who faces down the bow of a ship about to be sundered on the rocks and finds a way to help those who survive it. Someone with dark impulses who chooses almost always to be a champion for good. Who had his whole world ripped apart and tossed back into the universe, having to rebuild himself up again from the foundations. Irrespective of whether it's pre-Trial with Peri or post-Trial with any number of companions, there's always something very interesting going on in his head.

I think you've really captured what makes Colin's Doctor fascinating. 5 felt like he needed a warrior and an aggressive strong personality and even though he may have overcooked it a bit I think seeing 6 as a reaction to 5's failure explains a lot. Charley and six stories will always hold a special place in my heart, I may be biased. But I really think they show how complicated and how just unbelievably Kind and Good(as in a goodie instead of a baddie) the sixth Doctor is. I still feel cheated on the Draconian story as I got India but not Charley but even that serial shows Six's heroism. Seeing the Doctor struggling to be kind and compassionate to someone he doesn't trust and risking his life, makong sure she's safe, and even seeing her as a friend who he misses just ahows so many layers. I also found the six/Charley arc heartbreaking and I hope one day Charley is able to tell 'her' Doctor everything. He really does continually surprise me in the depth he has. |

One other note that I feel is really important is the capture of an era. I have favourites but I love all the Doctors so when I listen, for example, to a 7th Doctor story I want it to be obviously a 7th Doctor story.
Although not every story is going to be the paragon of this ideal I've heard very few stories that could work with a completely different Doctor.
Now as for a paragon I put forth Mind Runners and Demon Rises as the perfect Fourth Doctor story. It's as if everything that makes the Fourth Doctor the Fourth Doctor was used in this tale. I'm not a huge Tom Baker fan but no other Doctor could have done this tale in the same way or even at all.
I love every Doctor. Some Doctors get saddled with similar stories and some of the really bad stories you could even throw a different Doctor in with only minor changes. But when I get a "Melevolent" or a "Demon Rises" or even "Bounty of Ceres" that's what makes being a Doctor Who fan magical. It's always about the Doctor...but each Doctor has different strengths and different personalities and even different weaknesses.
Although it's not Big Finish I just finished "Harvest of Time" and it could only be Jon and Roger as Doctpr and Master. Maybe Capaldi and Gomez but even that would be pushing it.
When a story is perfectly suoted to the Doctor it stars it can star my least favourite Doctor and still be my favourite story of the month because I wouldn't hear that story with another Doctor.
If Third Doctor 4 is as uniquely Third Doctor as HoT I will be in heaven!

5/6. Affable nice guy in Peter Davison's iteration, that endears me to most heroes. And the irascible jerk with a heart of gold.
As far as surprising. Big Finish's work with the 8th doctor. It's weird I guess, but McGann always felt the most normal of the Doctors.
