Wow, so Tennant was given the role of The Doctor, before the first series aired. That's a surprise to me.

Wow, so Tennant was given the role of The Doctor, before the first series aired. That's a surprise to me. If I remember right he was announced officially just before the Slitheen 2-parter, so very early on in the Eccleston run. He had been cast during the rehearsals for the live Quatermass Experiment which aired the week after Rose so yeah, it would have been just before the show came back that he got the gig if they rehearsed a few weeks prior.

They were wrapping filming on series one, personal circumstances were making Eccelstone reconsider his commitment to Series 2. RTD took himself off to the Casanova filming to think, watched Tennant, in a filming break Tennant asked for a part in Series 2 (To Date I think that's still the only time he's asked for a job rather then go through the audition process) RTD replied to the effective of "Sure how about The Doctor" and the rest as they say,,,

Interesting interview, thank you for posting it. I love to see Tennant and Piper together because they always seem like they're having a lot of fun and the casting backstory adds fascinating insight into a period of behind the scenes events that had a big impact on the show. I think in the long view, reintroducing the concept of regeneration early on in the series' revival was a good thing. Audiences reacted positively to both Eccleston and Tennant, but having that transition was, I think, vital to keying in new viewers to the idea that the actor would change now and then.

It was still a huge risk for the show, though after Ecclestone leaving was leaked. I'm not sure if today it would have worked.

I always thought Tennant was RTDs first choice, not Eccleston.

I always thought Tennant was RTDs first choice, not Eccleston. No the BBC had someone picked for 9th . then Eccleston contacted RTD by E-mail and asked for an audition, which he did, and RTD preferred it, so he got it.

Wow, so Tennant was given the role of The Doctor, before the first series aired. That's a surprise to me. He's often spoken of having to make the decision not knowing if he would be the Doctor only for the regeneration scene - so obviously before anyone knew if the show would get a second series or not, which can't have been any later than Rose smashing it in the ratings. He had to consider the possibility of being 'that bloke who was DW for thirty seconds'.

I recall Mark Gatiss saying that on the set of Quatermass, that he was one of the first to know that David had been cast when he quietly whispered the news into his ear.

On the otherhand, the legacy of Doctor Who was ensured for generations to come. I love Big Finish, but I know what I prefer

Just think what Big Finish would have done with the Tenth Doctor... On the otherhand, the legacy of Doctor Who was ensured for generations to come. I love Big Finish, but I know what I prefer I wasn’t suggesting I would have rather had audio adventures than television ones with the Tenth Doctor, just I am sure Big Finish would have continued his run. And who knows where they would have taken the character. David Tennant raised the profile of the show and bought new viewers to the series. Only today I had a conversation with a woman who didn’t know that Doctor Who was now a woman, because they only watched the show when David Tennant was the Doctor. Plus if he had become the current Doctor on audio I think that would have impacted on the Eighth Doctor - so I wouldn’t want to change a thing.
