As i’m guessing that theres a whole lot of people who found big finish a good many years from when they started, is it possible to catch up? I started in 2015 and since then theres been so many new releases i’ve passed up as ive been getting older ones instead (for example of what ive missed these past years- All the Diary of river song releases, CDNM 1&2, still need the last two war doctor box sets, unit box sets, the master trilogy, Locum doctor trilogy, Six and constance...the list goes on.) Whilst i am starting to get closer to catching up on what i want since the warehouse clearance and 51-100 being discontinued, im still at least 10 years behind on a whole, having less recent reeases than older ones. Im wondering wether i should just focus more on preordering future releases and less on trying to collect the older ones as i have been?

Pre-order what takes your fancy, but by all means dip into the vast back catalog, and take advantage of sales. The 99 for 99p contains fantastic bargains, provided you aren't averse to downloads. It lasts until the end of April, so pick up the pilot episodes of the various ranges and if you like the story, get the rest of the series if it's under the same discount. Anyway, odds are that if you prioritise the older releases than the newer releases will end up on sale or discounted in a few years, when you've logged more listening hours. If you want the CDs for 51-100, priotise those as once they sell out they won't be repressed. notthebigfinishforum.freeforums.net/thread/4270/99p-returns-ends-april-30th

I wouldn't worry too much about catching up. As long as you're behind, there's always new stories to enjoy.
That said, if you're set on doing so, I'd suggest focusing on one story thread (like a particular Doctor) at a time. Just to give yourself direction.

Like i said i am catching up on a lot of early stuff now i just dont know wether to contiue catching up and moving on to get all the hex arc from magic mouse trap and get six and flip and six and charley and six and peri and six and jamie and finish eight and lucie series 2-4 and then dark eyes 2-4 and then doom 1-4 .....(how many audio productions can a company release )or just skip all them and jump to the present and start with Mathew Sharpe and ravenous and think about collecting the older storys down the line? I mean i guess it makes more sense money wise to get older releases instead of new ones its just i alway feel like im missing out and want to know why galifrey the time war is amazing or why the war masters a masterpiece (no pun intended). Its just making me think about my collection and how maybes im not effectively getting the best big finish has to offer for the sake of coimpletionism.

When I first started collecting Big Finish in January 2015, I went through and snapped up the cheap early Main Range releases. Then the Eighth Doctor Adventures went on sale, so I grabbed those too. I saw Dark Eyes 4's release that March, so I picked up Dark Eyes so I could be up to date. As the year rolled on I grabbed one or two series from ranges that went on sale ( Fourth Doctor Adventures, The Lost Stories, Main Range 51-100 in one of those big sales) and decided to start pre-ordering some box set releases in around June. Come September it was every Doctor Who box set on pre-order, and I started to build a modest collection. Then the Torchwood monthly range kicked off and I started subscribing to that. Then the Main Range come February 2016. Through 2016 I pre-ordered every Doctor Who boxset and picked up some more series of various ranges ( Jago & Litefoot, more Fourth Doctor Adventures, Companion Chronicles, etc.). Then 2017 rolled around and I decided I was just going to fill in every gap that I had when the releases went on sale, and that's what I'm still doing now. It's great to be able to stay up to date on all the current releases, but it's really not that important. I remember the fourth series of the Fourth Doctor Adventures coming out when I found Big Finish - now I've picked those stories up in a sale! The time sort of disappears and before you know it all that new stuff that you couldn't afford at the time has decided to go on sale. It can be a pain to wait, but it's also worth it I know some people are suggesting focusing on particular Doctors/companions/story arcs/etc., but I say just go for whatever you can get! You never know what might surprise you Long story short, if there's anything new coming up that you really want, then I suggest pre-ordering it, otherwise focus on picking stuff up in sales for now Given a little time this new stuff will be on sale anyway (and probably for a little bit cheaper than the pre-order price!), so patience is all you need really

Im wondering wether i should just focus more on preordering future releases and less on trying to collect the older ones as i have been? Depends what you are short on, funds or time - or possibly neither. If you can only afford one new release compared with many discounted releases, would that one release sate your audio appetite? I would get bored listening to one strand of Big Finish release, after awhile my enthusiasm would dwindle. There are many fabulous audio-dramas, not just those made by Big Finish, and listening to a variety keeps my interest levels high. I usually listen to a block of a certain type then switch to something different. I never burden myself with aim of catching up as it would turn into a chore and diminish my enjoyment. Okay so my roundabout way in responding is follow what piques your interest, be it a new or old release, and still falls within permissible funds/time to enjoy.

I started collecting in 2016. I haven't made any conscious effort to catch-up, just picking up what I can through sales. Turns out Big Finish loves sales as well as stories, so I've caught up with quite a bit via that method. I've focused more on picking up new stuff I'm interested in, most of which doesn't rely on previous storylines so it doesn't matter I haven't caught up.
Depends what really piques your interest, there are some stellar storylines in the past catalogue but equally the recent stuff has been great as well.

I've never been behind in the Doctor Who Main Range, bar a few releases in 2000 after my first story, so thankfully catching up has never been necessary for those. (I assume the Main Range is the most daunting for new collectors having 236 releases and counting.) Picking up Doctor Who Main Range titles retrospectively though is fairly easy with the regular BF offers and sales. Ignoring past releases could mean missing out on some great stories that can be had for a a good price. I am a bit behind in some more recent BF stuff but I see that as a challenge more than a problem. They are not going to be discontinued anytime soon. The box-sets usually turn up on offer at various stages too, so always look out for sales and use those to tick off the older releases you are interested in. Pre-ordering anything that takes your fancy is a good way to get the new stuff at a decent price too. So by combining pre-ordering and sales you can chip away at the stories you are interested in no problem... don't think about it and you'll look back in a few years time and go Wow! Where did all that shelf space go!

Big Finish really do a fantastic job of being approachable with their releases - any release is a jumping on point and they don't push their listeners to be complenists. Crossover elements from other Doctors and spin off ranges are handled with a nice deft touch. If you want the full journey, it'll defiantly add to your experience, but it's not a perquisite by any means.

I started listening in 2014 and I thought I'd NEVER catch up. My first BF audio was Dark Eyes, which was a terrible choice for a first, but I enjoyed it. Next was Eighth Doctor Main Range, and then went back and did the MR in order. Then the Eighth Doctor Adventures, because I REALLY wanted to hear them. Then I would pick up things that were on sale. It took me about 2 years, but I got caught up. My first MR sub going forward rather than going back was a celebration for me. Do it in whatever order you want, and just enjoy them. It's quite an adventure.
