So we've had a number of recasts at Big Finish over the last half-decade, both official and unofficial.
How do their episode counts compare to that of the originals? Which episodes to count gets a little tricky, as you've got the Companion Chronicles, which vary the amount a given actor is "playing" any given character.
For our purposes, we should at least count the appearances where actors are actually billed as the recast in question. So, The Light at the End, The Early Adventures, The Third Doctor Adventures, The First Doctor Adventures, and the last two Companion Chronicles boxed sets.
We have William Russell, Peter Purves, and now David Bradley all being billed as The First Doctor.
We have Frazer Hines as The Second Doctor.
We have Tim Treloar as The Third Doctor.
We have Elliot Chapman as Ben Jackson.
We have Jemma Powell as Barbara Wright.
And we also now have Claudia Grant as Susan Foreman,
And Jamie Glover as Ian Chesterton.
So, starting with The Doctors...
...and the First Doctor in particular, William Hartnel has, according to wikipedia, 29 stories across 134 episodes.
William Russell now... has:
2 eps - The Light at the End
4 eps - Domain of the Voord
4 eps - The Doctor's Tale
4 eps - The Age of Endurance
4 eps - The Fifth Traveler
for a total of 5 stories across 14 episodes.
Peter Purves has:
4 eps - The Bounty of Ceres
4 eps - An Ordinary Life
4 eps - The Ravelli Conspiracy
4 eps - The Sontarans
2 eps - Across the Darkened City (credited in the booklet)
for a total of 5 stories across 14 episodes.
and David Bradley has:
1 eps - TWICE UPON A TIME (the big one)
4 eps - The Destination Wars
4 eps - The Great White Hurricane
for a total of 3 stories across 9 episodes.
if we add all those up, we get 13 stories across 37 episodes.
Moving on to the Second Doctor, Patrick Troughton has 21 stories across 119 episodes (again, according to wikipedia).
Frazer Hines has:
2 eps - The Light at the End
4 eps - The Yes Men
4 eps - The Forsaken
4 eps - The Black Hole
4 eps - The Isos Network
2 eps - The Mouthless Dead (credited in the booklet)
2 eps - The Story of Extinction (credited in the booklet)
2 eps - The Integral (credited in the booklet)
2 eps - The Edge (credited in the booklet)
4 eps - The Night Witches
4 eps - The Outliers
4 eps - The Morton Legacy
4 eps - The Wreck of the World
for a total of 13 stories across 42(!) episodes.
obviously, having a single Second Doctor actor means his numbers go up a lot quicker than any of the three First Doctors (heh).
And finally, the Third Doctor! Wikipedia once again tells me that Jon Pertwee has 26 stories across 139 episodes (including his audio dramas, much as some would like to forget them heh)
Tim Treloar has, thus far:
2 eps - The Light at the End
4 eps - Prisoners of the Lake
4 eps - The Havoc of Empires
4 eps - The Transcendence of Ephros
4 eps - The Hidden Realm
4 eps - The Conquest of Far
4 eps - Storm of the Horofax
4 eps - The Rise of the New Humans
4 eps - The Tyrants of Logic
for an impressive total of 9 stories across 34 episodes.
He's doing remarkably well for himself
Moving on the companions of Doctor Who...
Jacqueline Hill has 16 stories across 77 episodes as Barbara Wright.
Jemma Powell has:
4 eps - The Age of Endurance
4 eps - The Fifth Traveler
4 eps - The Destination Wars
4 eps - The Great White Hurricane
for a total of 4 stories across 16 episodes.
Michael Craze has 9 stories across 40 episodes as Ben Jackson.
Elliot Chapman has:
4 eps - The Yes Men
4 eps - The Forsaken
2 eps - The Mouthless Dead
2 eps - The Bonfires of the Vanities
2 eps - The Plague of Dreams
4 eps - The Night Witches
4 eps - The Outliers
4 eps - The Morton Legacy
for a total of 8 stories across 26 episodes.
Carole Ann Ford and Willaim Russell are still at least semi-active with their characters and I don't feel like totalling that ups right now heh.
but Claudia Grant and Jamie Glover have each:
4 eps - The Destination Wars
4 eps - The Great White Hurricane
for a total of 2 stories across 8 episodes each as Susan Foreman and Ian Chesterton respectively.
and, last (and some would say least), Andrew Sachs has:
4 eps - The Boy that Time Forgot
But yeah! So, nobody has surpassed the originals, though Chapman will have surpassed Craze's story count with the next CC set, and will get that episode count up soon enough.
[edit, snipped, for clarity]
There are of course upcoming Companion Chronicles, Early Adventures, First Doctor Adventures, and Third Doctor Adventures.
I wonder how long it will be before the recasts surpass the originals' story and episode numbers?
And how long before Big Finish start making use of Lily Travers and Jared Garfield in the First Doctor Adventures?
Anyway, cheers!
