Love the picture, but still not ready to forgive and forget when it comes to Grade.

Made my day! At least he has a sense of humour about it. And just think, there's an alternative universe out there where the classic era wasn't cancelled and Paul McGann was never the Doctor, the New Series never started, loads of the novels were never written and Big Finish never happened... Personally I think it was all one of Seven's brilliant schemes to ensure the Doctor would triumph and live for ever! 'Oh Michael, I'm far more than just another Time Lord...'

Great pic!
But if it hadn't been cancelled would we be seeing it still on our telly screens today?

Amazes me he still gets the hate when it was Peter Cregeen that cancelled the show. Grade had long since left the BBC. He certainly tried to kill it but neither Creegen or Jonathan Powell put ANY resources into the show after Grade and they don't get a tenth of the grief. I guess because he was the bogeyman of the hiatus and has always been a much more prominent name than Creegen or Powell with the public.

I think it's also that Grade was actively seeking to kill the show whilst Creegen (as I recall) was just indifferent and couldn't get anyone to articulate a clear reason for it not to be cancelled.

I concur with nightwing: Cregeen didn't do it out of malevolence and ego, like Grade (plus, he was nowhere near as public as Grade had been. Or bonking the then-lead's ex, for that matter). Cregeen himself said he thought the programme had a place and future, but it needed a new approach. While the CM did do good, when a show can no longer attract established writers, and has to constantly gamble on total novices, however talented they may be, that's not a sign of great health.

Ironically, Grade's attempt at cancellation and all the "Doctor in Distress" stuff could have given the show the attention it needed when it came back. Unfortunately, neither Trial of a Time Lord nor Time and the Rani was quite what the show needed and by the time it had the new direction it needed, the audience wasn't watching.

Grade was right though - if they’d canned the series after Silly Nemesis.

I think Grade just makes a better bogeyman - there are loads of fans who think he did cancel the show in 1989.

Hilarious, Grade has a sense of humour after all. I think he always has - he revels in the panto baddie role from Who fans, witness his Room 101 ep.

Unfortunately, neither Trial of a Time Lord nor Time and the Rani was quite what the show needed and by the time it had the new direction it needed, the audience wasn't watching. I am minded to compare the situation with the breaks the current series has had the past few years, apparently to allow the writers more time. Back then there was the impression that Grade had, if the BBC spokespersons were to be believed, imposed the hiatus as an opportunity for the production team to get their act together. I remember when it returned for Trial of a Timelord in reduced length and budget, where the feeling was that we were expected to be happy that it was back on telly - what are we complaining about? I recall the excellent Space Helmet for a Cow vol 1 by Paul Kirkley which if my memory serves correct, details how the production duo (aka of the one blames the other routine) effectively were caught out by the commissioning of series 23 as they hadn't used the hiatus to plan anything, despite being on payroll the whole time. Grade presented an opportunity that was better than cancellation, but it seems it was a wasted one.
