So should the Media be run from a platform of Positive Action then? Regards mark687 A) We're not talking about all media, we're talking about film and TV, B) You still have to meet a set criteria to write on big shows so it's not like they'd give a slot to a random woman or black person. Nobody gets a free lunch, otherwise 'no unsolicited materials' wouldn't exist and C) in the prior thread, Paul Guyot and others like him, guys who benefit from the system staying exactly as it is, are coming and out saying 'this isn't right' if it always defaults to just white guys, even when they aren't actually qualified or good enough. Why would you want to protect a system that rewards nepotism over real ability and hard work?
Ask yourself this: why does the 'it's all about the writing' and 'good writing' arguments the internet trots out always default to white guys? Why are other people never recommended, even though they exist and have worked on plenty of popular shows and material?
This debate will go round in circles unless we take the view that every applicant with the required skill set should be employed.

But the problem is systematic Mark, and lots of people aren’t getting the required skill set to have big breaks because of it.

No, but there are immediate ways to even the playing field without compromising content, as Guyot and others have discussed (even among my own network and contacts, it comes up). If the industry is in a place where agents can actuallly turn to writers and use 'diversity' as the reason why they're not being hired (even if the job goes to white guy B as opposed A most times), and then writers of other backgrounds are losing legit opportunities, something clearly isn't fitting. You can't be diverse and then not be diverse, anymore than a leopard can be a duck.

I don't see how you can level the playing ground without some form of complete open house hiring in play then, so an entire industry change, so no in-house Production Crew or Stars.

Sorry I know I keep saying this but (especially in the case of a continuing show) experience and skill should be primary considerations. I'd have dearly loved to know that Chibnall was making decisions for the right reasons rather than purely to be PC, but having kept his cards close to his chest that long, in the interim I had to come to the conclusion that for my part it isn't my diversity or representation that's in question, and perhaps I'd best leave it to those whose is to give him the final grade on his actions, motivations, or achievements in that respect. Granted that it has at times sounded suspiciously like Chibnall or BBC being motivated mainly by a desire toot their own horn and say "Look at us, aren't we progressive?" - I still think it came precariously close to being rudely dismissive about a lot of important DW milestones to cast the First Doctor as more backwards than he really was, as if trying to make Thirteen seem that much more progressive in comparison - but regardless of anyone's motivations, maybe Chibnall really is setting new milestones and creating new opportunities, and maybe I should just let him toot away about it for all the publicity it's worth? I suppose also sometimes appearances can be deceiving, I haven't always been entirely sure that the new logo is popping up everywhere for the right reasons either, that can seem a little totalitarian at first glance - but if the intention were simply to lend the franchise coherence and help inform newer audiences that the series has an inexhaustibly glorious history, how could I argue with that? It's exactly what I'm always hoping that newer audiences will get out of the same continuity references that can give an audience of longer standing a warm fuzzy familiar feeling like the one I get every time The Doctor mentions a former companion.
