Two solid Holmes-penned Pertwee stories that each introduced a new Timelord and talked of the dangers of plastic. But which do you enjoy more?

Two solid Holmes-penned Pertwee stories that each introduced a new Timelord and talked of the dangers of plastic. But which do you enjoy more? Two very differently stylised versions of the same concept. The celluloid Spearhead versus the action comic Terror. To me it is 50/50 dependent on the mood. If the original tapes of the latter survived then it may be weighted towards Barry Letts series launch.

Terror, but only just. I'm not a huge fan of the CSO used in Terror, but it does have The Master, killer Daffodils, and the suffocating plastic chair.

Spearhead undoubtedly. Terrors good but just that, to me anyways. I adore Spearhead and think its quintessential Doctor who.

Terror
Brilliant intro for a character in the Master, Delgado oozes charming malevolence with such conviction, when he and Pertwee meet in Ep 4 you can almost see JP go "This guy means business I need to up my game".
Then we have Jo Grant, a much more likeable and dare I say useful companion then Liz Shaw, now Liz Shaw was introduced as a hard sciences expert, which is fine. but then so's the 3rd Doc which equals companion being made redundant. Jo by comparison, throws herself into the action with gusto.

Hmmmm... I think I'd just lean towards Terror of the Autons but I love them both. Two very good Doctor Who stories from the good ol' days and Jon Pertwee at his best.

'Spearhead from Space', it feels like I'm watching a movie at times. It was my first dvd purchase, and one of my happiest blu ray buys.

Terror of the Autons was the first Third Doctor story I saw, so I kind of have loyalty towards it. Plus it has Delgado's Master. Both good stories though.

Tough call. very tough. Would need a rewatch to decide, but I agree with whiskeybrewer that it varies from day to day

Oh, Spearhead. Don't get me wrong I love Terror and you can feel Holmes upping his game with a very wicked grin spread across his face, but there's no use getting around it: the Autons are kind of negated to introduce The Master which diminishes them somewhat and I've always felt rather bitter that they never got another turnaround in the original series. I get why, but still.

Alternates day-by-day, but at the moment, I'd say it's Terror of the Autons for reinventing the reinvented wheel. Both stories are a credit to Holmes's versatility as a writer and this lovely little vein of creative terrors that he'd plumb throughout his tenure on the show. Terror, though, wins out for me just because it lives up so aggressively to its name. A plastic film that seals over the victim's face and suffocates them (horrible). A facsimile policeman struck by a car over a cliff (fantastic). An ugly little child's toy that strangles those unwary in the heat (vile). A companion hypnotised into delivering a claymore into the Doctor's lab (dangerous). And who can forget the Master? An equal and opposite to the Doctor whose presence just so dominates this story and the next that you're almost rooting for him by the end of The Mind of Evil. Almost.

I usually score them equally but if I had to choose one as superior I’d go Terror for the simple reason of Pertwee’s in it more. Yes Spearhead looks amazing but as it’s a post-regeneration AND having to establish UNIT and the Exile there’s just a tad more exposition.

Saw this on Flashbak yesterday, and it looks quite sinister to myself, from the days of true waxworks shop window dummies. 'The Auton Invasion of Paris', c1900?

I love both of them! Spearhead for being a more cinematic experience and being a brilliant post regeneration story. Terror for introducing the master and having extremely creative black comedy death scenes! Maybe Terror? But are amazing!

Spearhead, but not by much, to the point where I originally typed "Terror, but not by much"! For all the reasons listed above...

Oof. That’s a tricky one. If I was going just for which one best utilised the Autons then it would of course be Spearhead from Space. Terror has some great ideas and delightful set pieces involving them but they are (as someone already mentioned) subservient to the Master throughout and are very much a secondary threat.
Would have to say Terror simply because of it introducing the Master and what it sets up in the long term.
