I've recently been re-watching Torchwood and keeping track of the **** ******/dates for fun, and I've come up with a (possibly controversial) new placing for all of the events in Doctor Who up to Series 5, The Sarah Jane Adventures up to Series 4, and Torchwood up to Children of Earth. In Fragments, Owen's story is said to take place four years earlier. In Exit Wounds, Tosh mentions how she had to cover for Owen in his second week during the 'Space Pig' incident. For this to make sense, Owen must be recruited in early 2006, meaning Exit Wounds occurs in 2010 (a year later than the timeline presented in this thread). Expanding on this, Ianto's story is twenty-one months earlier, so he must have joined Torchwood Three in 2008, placing Everything Changes through to Out of Time in 2008, and Combat through End of Days in 2009. Now, since End of Days now takes place in 2009, Series 3 of Doctor Who must also take place during 2009. Let's say it all takes place by the end of March, then Planet of the Dead happens at Easter (April), then Series 4 happens (up to returning Martha home at the end of The Doctor's Daughter). Now, here's where it gets interesting: there's no hard and fast time frame for how long Donna's gone, nor is there any specific indication as to what time of year it is. So, let's say Christmas 2009 comes and goes trouble-free While we're still in 2009, The Sarah Jane Adventures: Series 1 would take place in the last third ( Revenge of the Slitheen is the first day of term, so it's approximately September). Now we're in 2010. Let's insert Torchwood: Series 2, then The Stolen Earth/Journey's End. This way, all our spin-off characters are up-to-date. Now we have Doctor Who: Series 5, with all the relevant episodes happening in June. We can slot Sarah Jane Adventures: Series 2 and 3 in this year, all beginning around September (again, Day of the Clown is the start of a new school year). According to the UK grades system this makes sense: Luke's 14 at the start of Series 1, placing him in the 10th grade, so he's 15 by the end of Series 3, the end of the 11th grade. At the start of Series 4 he's heading off to uni a year early - if we place Series 4 toward the end of the 2010-2011 school year (when he'll be 16), this works perfectly, as he's at the end of the 11th grade by then (so he skips the 12th grade and goes straight to university). During the Series 2 period, Children of Earth takes place (as I think it's suggested it's toward the start of the school year). Then, come Christmas 2010, we have The End of Time. Everything from Doctor Who: Series 6 onward should match up then Final order: 2005: Rose 2006: Aliens of London - The Christmas Invasion 2007: New Earth - The Runaway Bride 2008: TW: Everything Changes - Out of Time 2008: Voyage of the Damned 2009: TW: Combat - Captain Jack Harkness 2009: Smith and Jones - 42 2009: TW: End of Days 2009: Utopia - Last of the Time Lords 2009: Planet of the Dead 2009: Partners in Crime - The Doctor's Daughter 2009: SJA: Series 1 Early 2010: TW: Series 2 Early to Mid-2010: The Stolen Earth/Journey's End Mid-2010: The Eleventh Hour - The Big Bang 2010: SJA: Series 2 2010: TW: Children of Earth 2010: SJA: Series 3 2010: The End of Time - Part 1 2011: The End of Time - Part 2 Mid-2011: SJA: Series 4 I haven't accounted for any of the audios in this list because I don't know the chronology of them as well as the TV shows, but I think this is a workable alternative way of looking at things There is only one continuity error I can find in this whole list (although there's probably something glaringly obvious wrong with it that I'm overlooking) - when Jack takes Owen back to the Hub for the first time, the Doctor's hand in the jar is clearly visible. Given that Jack isn't able to have that until well after Aliens of London, that was probably just a mistake the production crew made.

Ooh I like that. I had kinda been ignoring Fragments’ dating but that makes sense of it.
Only alterations I would make is putting at least the first few stories of SJA Series 1 in 2008, prior to Smith and Jones. This is because in the alternate timeline in Turn Left, Sarah Jane, Maria and Clyde all die in alternate version of events at Royal Hope Hospital. This means that in the proper timeline Sarah Jane must have met Maria and Clyde by the time Smith and Jones happens. I did mean to alter this on the original post but must have forgotten. Also I think The Last Sontaran would probably go way before the rest of SJA Series 2 to be nearer to The Poison Sky. The gap can be attributed to it taking quite a while for the Jacksons to sell their house and the Chandras to arrange moving in.
Planet of the Dead is definitely after Series 4 finale too, as one of the passengers mentions when the planets were in the sky.
I’ll get to work to amend the original post to include that timeframe.

Planet of the Dead is definitely after Series 4 finale too, as one of the passengers mentions when the planets were in the sky. I’ll get to work to amend the original post to include that timeframe. Actually, I've just remembered something - Sarah Jane mentions that Luke is "only 14" when she's leaving the Doctor in Journey's End, so if we move any of SJA: Series 1 to 2008, that means The Stolen Earth/Journey's End must take place during 2009. If that's the case, Fragments no longer lines up, as that would place Owen's recruitment year as 2005, which is too early. And we can't fix this by keeping SJA: Series 1 in 2009 and moving move Smith and Jones until after September 2009 (when Revenge of the Slitheen must take place in order for Luke to still be 14 for Journey's End in 2010) as the Master only had an 18-month leeway from the landing in Utopia, and he has to be able to go as far back as December 2007. This means Utopia can't be any later than June 2009. Here's an idea: What if the landing in Utopia was actually a little earlier than Martha's native time? Let's say Smith and Jones takes place in Late-Sept/Oct 2009 (allowing for Sarah Jane to have met Maria and Clyde) and the TARDIS lands to refuel in, say, April 2009 (allowing the Master a couple of months to create his presence by Christmas 2007). There's no reason why they would have to refuel relative to Martha's travelling with the Doctor. This allows us to keep the 18-month leeway and retain Luke's age! With SJA: Series 1 now firmly taking place in 2009, we can keep The Stolen Earth/Journey's End in 2010, after TW: Series 2, keeping in line with Exit Wounds. Okay, this is what I'm thinking: Christmas 2007: The Runaway Bride 2008: TW: Everything Changes - Out of Time Christmas 2008: Voyage of the Damned 2009: TW: Combat - End of Days ~April 2009: Utopia ~September 2009: SJA: Series 1 ~October 2009: Smith and Jones - Last of the Time Lords Late 2009: Partners in Crime - The Doctor's Daughter Late 2009: SJA: The Last Sontaran Early 2010: Vincent and the Doctor (Museum scenes - they're set in Winter 2010 from what I understand) 2010: TW: Series 2 2010: The Stolen Earth/Journey's End April 2010: Planet of the Dead 2010: The Eleventh Hour - The Big Bang ~September 2010: SJA: Day of the Clown - Enemy of the Bane ~September 2010: TW: Children of Earth Late 2010-Early 2011???: SJA: Series 3 Christmas 2010: The End of Time Would that seem about right? EDIT: I just realised this can't work as Smith and Jones has to take place before Voyage of the Damned according to Turn Left. I think I'm going to have to admit defeat on this, as I spent the better part of two hours just trying to come up with the above adjustments...

I think I'm going to have to admit defeat on this, as I spent the better part of two hours just trying to come up with the above adjustments... An idea-Owen’s segment in Fragments takes place over the course of some time. Let’s break it down- Scene 1: Owen and Katie living together, showing her forgetfulness. This is the starting point for the segment, so crucially is the only scene tied to the precise date given by the caption. This seems to be towards the start of her degeneration. Scene 2: Owen and Katie are told it’s early onset Alzheimer’s after numerous scans and tests-so I’d say some months have passed already. Owen is still planning a ‘summer wedding’ so this is probably May/June timeframe. Owen pushes for one more scan Scene 3: Owen and Katie are told they found a ‘tumour’ and need to operate. This likely is at least a week or so later from Scene 2. Scene 4: Katie’s operation. Given the urgency of her condition, likely days/weeks after Scene 3. Scene 5: Aftermath of Katie’s funeral, Owen is taken to Torchwood. I have no idea how long a funeral takes to organise, but let’s be generous and assume it took Owen at least a few months to sort it due to his general grief/shock at her death by alien parasite. Now I would say there’s lee-way enough for the segment to cover a few weeks if not months. Furthermore, what’s to say Owen immediately started work at Torchwood? He’s clearly not in the best place mentally, so perhaps there was a gap of a few months between his recruitment and his actual first day on the job, which would be in February/March 2006.

So I can’t find anything that definitively says what age Luke was created at, so I’m assuming 13.
With this assumption we get this broad timeline- March 2005: Rose 2006: Fragments-Owen’s segment March 2006: Aliens in London/World War Three September 2006: Boom Town December 2006: The Christmas Invasion 2007: DW Series 2 December 2007: The Runaway Bride Early 2008: Fragments-Ianto’s segment August 2008-January 2009: SJA Series 1 September 2008-January 2009: TW Series 1 January 2009: Utopia (This means the Master can arrive on Earth as early as July 2007) 2009: DW Series 3 August 2009: Luke turns 14 2009: TW Series 2 up to A Day in the Death December 2009: Voyage of the Damned Early 2010: Rest of TW Series 2 Early 2010: DW Series 4 Early 2010: The Last Sontaran Early 2010: The Stolen Earth/Journey’s End April 2010: Planet of the Dead Mid 2010: Children of Earth July 2010: DW Series 5 September 2010-Late 2010: SJA Series 2 and SJA Series 3 up to The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith (Luke is 15) Christmas 2010: The End of Time Early 2011: Rest of SJA Series 3 2011: DW Series 6 2011: Miracle Day September 2011: Luke starts Sixth Form aged 16, Mr Chandra suggests he apply to uni early Late 2012: SJA Series 4 (Luke goes to university a year early aged 17) 2013: SJA Series 5
I’ll work to update the original post.

I honestly don't think there's anything to change any more. If we move DW: Series 3 back to 2008 for Smith and Jones to take place before Voyage of the Damned, that pushes TW: Series 1 back to 2007-2008 so that Christmas is factored into Out of Time. At this point, everything seems to play out the way you already had it written up. DW: Series 4 takes place in 2009, as does TW: Series 2. SJA: Series 2 starts after Journey's End (as "Maria and her dad are in Cornwall", and if they've moved to America already why would the be in Cornwall?), and the Specials all take place in 2010. This has been fun, but now we've thrown a few ideas around I don't think there are any changes here that actually worked

This bit doesn't quite work. In Voyage of the Damned, Wilf's saying how the last two Christmases in London have been dangerous. We can't push Voyage of the Damned back to 2009, otherwise his statement wouldn't really make sense.

And in addition to that I’ve remembered Web of Lies, the webcast tie-in to Miracle Day, features Jack and Gwen flashbacks set explicitly in 2007. Yeah we may just have to accept the dates given for Owen’s segment make no sense.

Call me daft, but I thought that was a fascinating read. That pretty much covers most of the inconsistencies we've spotted here over the last couple of days and then some. I agree, another UNIT dating conundrum indeed...

To think this all could have been avoided if RTD had just set Rose in 2004.
Another issue with dating is that the novel Beautiful Chaos with Ten and Donna is set in May, and the audio story No Place is set in Autumn, again with Ten and Donna, but Planet of the Dead is set in April but after the Dalek Invasion. So Planet of the Dead might have to be pushed back to 2010. Although Turn Left does imply that Series 4 takes place between January and March 2009.

People actually care about this stuff? "Care about"? Not as such. Have fun playing around with it? Absolutely. It's like a multi-layered jigsaw puzzle where you don't know whether all the pieces will fit. It's fun just giving it a go.

A few minor updates- Charlotte Pollard Series 2 has been added. As it concerns a major crisis in modern London which UNIT do not get involved in, I’ve put it in early 2019 during the period UNIT isn’t active in the UK due to the funding review referenced in Resolution. Note I haven’t heard the series, so I could be wrong here.
Smashed has been added. I’ve put in early 2016 when Gwen is trying to get the new Torchwood off the ground. In Smashed she’s struggling for funding and I’m guessing by More Than This some funding is in place as she’s applying for planning permission to rebuild the Hub. Other recent Torchwood audios have been slotted into 2007/2008 as per their placement in relation to the TV series.
Island of the Fendhal has been put in August 2007, based on the TARDIS wiki entry.
Edit-oh and I’ve put Dead Media in early 2017, as the synopsis explicitly puts it in 2017 but the Doctor doesn’t mention Bill at any point, suggesting it’s before she learns the truth about him.

And so we enter 2020, and Spyfall has been added.
I’ve been trying to keep this up to date as new releases have been released, so there’s a few additions (mainly Torchwood).
