Absolutely loved this one. It's releases like this that remind me why The Early Adventures is probably my favorite range right now - not to say the other ranges aren't just as fabulous, of course!

Fabulous, fabulous story. Every EA touched by First/Vicki/Steven turns to pure gold: 'The Bounty of Ceres', 'The Ravelli Conspiracy' and now this! (And three more coming, brilliant!)
I loved 'The Power of the Daleks' vibe about this one, we know they are holding themselves in (just about!) and we know what will happen eventually because with Daleks it always will. And the waiting adds to the toe-curling tension... Highlights? So many, but the scenes of mutant horror in the "research centre" are unforgettable, and that riveting moment when Steven taunts the supervisor Dalek in the factory and it almost, almost gives in to its nature... wow!
And how perfect that the Daleks finally betray themselves by killing poor mutating Kenrik. They can resist killing humans when it suits them, but the sight of their Dalek genetic purity 'corrupted' by human DNA is too much for the xenophobia within. The hate that drives the Daleks reveals and helps destroy them; brilliant writing.
The politics around Majorian and Karna is well done and I liked the twist at the end - but I don't think Karna's scheming will gain her much. When she, even backed by 'the ambassador', orders the heavily-armed, battle-hardened, Dalek-loathing population to restart Dalek production, what do you think they will do to her?
But no wonder the Doctor is sombre as he leaves; the victory is no victory and he knows it.
Whatever happens on Winter now, sooner or later the next Dalek ship will arrive in orbit looking for the next cargo of new Daleks to feed their Empire... And when they find the planet beneath them in open rebellion and all the Daleks dead... Winter will end.

I really enjoyed this. A new member to my all time favourites club.
I do think Big Finish missed a trick here though. They have recorded in the past with David Graham for a Captain Scarlet audio - it would have been wonderful to have in star in this doing the voices of the Daleks. No offence to Nick Briggs but having one of the original Dalek voices on a First Doctor story who have been magnificent!

David Graham did it for the Vworp Vworp fanzine free CD 'The Mechancial Planet' - hard to believe it was 50 years after he last voiced the Daleks in 'The Daleks Masterplan'!!

I enjoyed most of the story, but didn't like the cold twist at the end. I had a few issues with it. 1) The Doctor should have told Majorian of Karna's ambitions with the Daleks. 2) They should have told Majorian that Karna was still on the loose. 3) Majorian was ready to shoot the Doctor with a Dalek-gun. I was quite surprised that (to my ears) he did not even try to defend himself against the "ambassador" and Karna. When he was telling the Dalek "pot calling the kettle black" I really expected him to pull out the gun and fire. A simultaneous death of either Majorian and Karna or Majorian and the Dalek would have been more satisfying. I agree that matters will not proceed according to Karna's plans. I can't see the people cooperating with her. I also think that unless there was more outside intervention the Daleks would eventually lay waste to the whole place. I half expected the Doctor to send the TARDIS only forward in time to see what did happen. I am looking forward to listening to the extended interviews and the next story.

Agree with all the above comments. This is definitely one of the best stories, not just best dalek stories but best generally, that BF have ever done. I enjoyed Robert Daws' performance. Maureen O'Brien really manages to sound 50 years younger, she is possibly the most successful of all the classic companions at doing so.
I'm not sure the bleak ending would have happened if this had been on TV, so this loses a couple of points on the authenticity scale. Also I'm not persuaded the Daleks needed the 100 smartest humans to put baby Daleks in their casings. They are supposed to be "brilliant engineers" and they seemed to manage without the need for slave labour in the production line in Power of the Daleks. I thought the smartest 100 were going to be tunred into Daleks or turned into the food the rest of the population ate. But these are very minor points - overall it was truly excellent

But these are very minor points - overall it was truly excellent I think the "100 smartest humans" thing is a ploy to pull any possibility of a threat out of the general population, as well as making sure they have humans who have the best possible ability to do the one job they feel is important to their survival.
