7.1 million overnights, which is a brilliant result. In fact it beats the final figure for all but one episode of the last series. Hillarious to watch the excuses from the usual suspects on some other forums. "It had no competition" being the latest. Hardly an excuse. Actually, a fact. Really? Bradly Wash was pulling in another 5 million viewers on ITV at the same time.
But hey, if it makes you happy to deny her success go for it.

Were you genuinely scared that The Chase would beat DW?

It kind of proves that RTD had it right all along; straight-forward stories with the emphasis on the characters is the recipe to success.
Heck, even the new TARDIS feels more of a follow-on from the Eccles/Tennant one.
The lore is a wonderful thing, but at the end of the day, a bunch of facts and figures are not the same thing as telling a compelling, exciting and/or moving story to people who have no real reason to care about all the minutae.

Bradley Walsh's quiz show The Chase, scheduled opposite Doctor Who scored 4.8 million viewers last night - a Coronation Street Special, no less - and its highest rating. So competition for Doctor Who was formidable - populist quiz show against niche sci-fi series. Which the latter won more viewers by a considerable margin. Anyone who claims to be any kind of Doctor Who fan must be pretty bloody churlish not to celebrate that.

Were you genuinely scared that The Chase would beat DW? It looks more like ITV were the ones who were scared, given that they put one of their most popular shows up against it.
The point is, it had competition... it beat the competition... well done Jodie and Chris.
(And all hail Bradly Walsh, the King of TV.)

I find it funny in the extreme that Brad's his own competition
Great they've managed the audience figures shows what a likeable and outward looking TARDIS Team can do.

This was a fantastic episode. Loving the build of the Stenza and is The Timeless Child gonna be the new Bad Wolf?

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

Just watched it again and noticed something...
After hanging unprotected in space for a while, our heroes get picked up by some randomly passing spacecraft and one of the first lines out of a characters mouth is...
"DON'T PANIC."

Missed a trick though last night, surely Bradley Walsh could've said "run the chase is on" (groans).

Told you lot ages ago to stick Doctor Who on a Sunday before Strictly results show & look what happens.
Now kneel before Zod & bow down to my wisdom (get Simon his pills).

Great overnight figures! I did think it’d lose about 2m from The Woman Who Fell to Earth, due to the normal drop off and The Chase. Glad that I was wrong!

So I really liked it. Not as much as Woman but still. I'm bummed we don't get Jodie's face in the titles with a cheeky wink (if ever that fit a Doctor, it's this one) but that's the nittiest of picks. New TARDIS? Gorgeous Jodie? Phenomenal Companions? We need more from Yaz but Graham and Ryan are great. I genuinely can't wait for next week and I hope they don't ruin such a pivotal moment in history with aliens.

I have no desire for the series to fail it’s just another incarnation of the show....it’s those other 5 million on the other channel lacking imagination that I am worried about

Mind you, I was waiting for Catherine Tate to say, "Am I bothered?" in 'Doctor Who' and that didn't happen.
Tim.

Yes exactly. But some people here are all constant negativity. I guess it makes them happy somehow...I pity them...

So, whilst I thought the episode was fine, I've been thinking about why it didn't totally work for me, so here's a little more of an in-depth review of the episode.
The dialogue, for one thing. I liked Moffat's wittiness during his era, but towards the end it did begin to get a little old, having a quip every other line, so it's nice to not have constant one-liners. Saying that, there's not much spark in the dialogue. The jokes get a little chuckle here and there, but mostly they feel like they fall flat. I overlooked it in the first episode, because... well, the first episode with Chibnall as lead writer can have a little leeway, but second week in and it's still just... fine.
Lack of tension - most of the stuff presented in this episode gets solved relatively quickly. The gang are separated, but get reunited five minutes later. There's a mystery of what the Ghost Monument really is - but we find out right away that it's the TARDIS. The boat doesn't work, but they fix it relatively quickly. The ribbons/Remnants become a threat, but are dispatched fairly quickly and easily. I saw someone saying that somehow the episode was both understuffed and overstuffed at the same time, and I suppose I agree with that. I feel like the true identity of the Ghost Monument could have been left a mystery for longer.
But, because I don't want to be too negative I'll list some positive things - the new theme tune and title sequence are great, I love them already. The actors were still on form, and I'm enjoying getting to know this TARDIS team more. The general plot of the episode was decent enough, and made a nice change from alien invasion/base under siege stories. Also, the cinematography was impressive, the director certainly made use of the South African landscapes.
So, all-in-all, it was fine, middle-of-the-road Who, certainly not the worst of the bunch. Not every episode can be a hit, but I think the thing that bugs me is that there's only a couple of things they needed to tweak to turn it into a pretty good Who episode. Though, I'm still very much enjoying this TARDIS team so far and I'm looking forward to them meeting Rosa Parks next Sunday!

Well, I liked it. I am still not bought on the theme music though. Visually, this was amazing and I definitely loved the spaceship crash. Well done! LOVED the Venusian Oojah (as Sgt. Benton would say), that was a great touch and I hope they keep it. I think this works especially well with a female Doctor.
I like the new TARDIS, although it is not my favorite. I still hope one day they revisit something like the 8th Doctor's TARDIS. Wood and Steampunk.
I also like the atmosphere of the show. And the style we have seen so far. For some reason, I get a slightly similar vibe I got from Firefly, so that is a plus.
As for the story. Weeell. The story itself is not bad, BUT... I think the problem with it is, similar stories have been done before and better. Not only by Who, but also by Big Finish and other TV shows like Star Trek.
In the end- was this an enjoyable piece of Television? Did I feel entertained? Yes, I did, I enjoyed it and it held my attention for all of the 50mins. What more could you want?
