Well, some spoilers: The first story is NOTHING like Inferno was. No parallel universe shenanigans, rather Liz Shaw and her boyfriend experimenting with the same gloop that caused the Primord transformation, and getting infected themselves along the way. And passing that onto the Third Doctor who then willingly helps develop the "disease" further. If I have any problem with it, is that the final resolution seems a bit too quick and easy, (and why the hell didn't Three just give himself the cure once he made it?) but that's rather par for the course with DW. The second story, well it's all about aliens using broadcast media to affect people. Not quite as strong a story as the first, but I still enjoyed it. All the way through, Culshaw's Brig is outstanding. I also felt that Katy must have been hitting the helium pipe as she sounds great as Jo. And I'll always love the warm tones of John Levene as Benton. Thanks!
That sounds interesting and actually answers one of the niggles I had with the free episode.
I think I will pick it up after all, since everybody appears to be very happy with it (the 3rd Doctor era with Jo is one of my favorites, after all).
I however still think that Culshaw does not quite reach Courtney's voice, it was, after all, very distinctive. But it would be very sad if someone could be replaced that easily...

Just finished "Primord", and my goodness, Jon Culshaw's performance is a miracle. I'd have sworn that was actually Nicholas Courtney playing the Brigadier. The story was fun, it takes you right back to the 70's, and Nicholas Brigg's music seals the deal. It's getting to be hard to keep up with all these Big Finish releases I just have to listen to. Just going back to "Primord", it does make me sad to think that of the four major cast members, only Katy Manning is still with us.

Well, we still have Levene, and on the interview disc, he seems really stoked to be playing Benton again.
BF, you need to bring all of these peeps back!

Anyone know what's going on with Richard Franklin, I miss him in these 3rd Doctor audios.

I suspect that time and age caught up with him, unfortunately.

Anyone know what's going on with Richard Franklin, I miss him in these 3rd Doctor audios. I wondered that too. He was in UNIT:Assembled two years ago of course as older Mike and read 'The Day of the Daleks' BBC audiobook last year (though no idea how far ahead these were recorded) so I really hope he'll be able to appear again as young Mike now the Brig. is back.
It might simply be that with a limit on the number of cast members they can budget for, every UNIT 'regular' means one fewer guest character. And finding enough for both Yates and Benton to do in the same story. What we really need in order to make room for more characters is two Third Doctor sets per year...

The Scream of Ghosts. The supporting characters feel well rounded and the use of sound in the story is, er, sound. Unfortunately, it’s another example of Guy Adams seemingly struggling with a story that’s over 60 minutes. The concept of the story is great, but it’s not enough to satisfy four parts. The last half drags, and I thought it was especially prevalent in part four.
Treloar is as great as ever. Culshaw is absolutely fantastic. Levene feels a little short changed, but he makes his presence well and truly known in any scene he’s in. I think this is very much Jo Grant’s story and Katy Manning puts in a wonderful performance.
Looking forward to more Third Doctor Adventures. Hopefully they’ll get the full UNIT family for a story next time. I’d like to see them tackle an eight part epic actually!

I haven’t really dipped into 3DA so far but I have to say, Culshaw’s Brig is making this soooo tempting!

I think this was Jo's boxset tbh. Maybe I missed it but she played a massive part in Primord as well. The Eight Part UNIT family epic would be outstanding.

The first story is fun. As many have said hearing Culshaw as the Brig is astonishing. The man is a real talent.
It's sort of weird that we get very little of the real Lis in this story. Hopefully we can now get stories set during Season 7.

The Scream of Ghosts.
I do feel that this second story has been a little overshadowed by the first. To be fair, Primord was a cracker, and it had the first appearance of the new Brigadier and Liz as well as a returning monster. But The Scream of Ghosts features treats of it's own - more Brig, Benton is back, and so are some unloved televisual adversaries that Big Finish have sprinkled their magic audio dust on. In fact, it seems to me, audio is the best medium for the tinsel-like Vardans - they are genuinely unsettling here. Oh, and finally - the story is an absolute corker!
Shall I air my one and only slight niggle? The music, so beautifully designed by Nick Briggs, with electronic bleeps and radiophonic bubbles, is everywhere! There's hardly a scene that isn't musically scored. It's ungrateful of me when it is so evocative of the Third Doctor's era, but perhaps here, a little less is more.
Other than that, this is yet another in what must be one of BF's best ranges. Alright, I'll say it - it might just be consistently the best. Of all the stories, only The Havoc of Empires failed to impress. Here, apart from a good, solid tale that could have been plucked straight out of the 70's, we have everything that makes this a nostalgia-fest for me - a village setting, lots of churning jeeps and militarily types, and the reassuring, slightly patronising tones of The Third Doctor and his always endearing companion Jo Grant. Both played to perfection.

Jon Culshaw does the wonderful thing of playing The Brigadier as opposed to just giving an impression. It can be a fine line in recasts. Daisy Ashford on the other hand is able to achieve the same thing without really sounding like Caroline John - that is usually next to impossible! Jemma Powell by comparison has next to no sincerity at all in her portrayal of Barbara; without reference to the character you wouldn't know who she was playing.
The 3DA's are generally good fun, but they lack ambition and original story telling - nothing in the sets really touches The Mega for instance. Apart from a couple they are mostly sequels/prequels relying on returning foes to keep up the interest. Not that that is totally unsuccessful - The Rise of the New Humans is my favourite Monk story by miles, and Primord is begging for another listen soon.
I too would love a Season Seven story taking over a full set - the traditional intense seven parter with, new 'foes with lots of grey areas', real drama and no easy resolution, accompanied by a gentle one part story that keeps Katy on board, and perhaps allows for a little frivolity to counter the epic.

It’s a real unwinded for me after all the daily work stress to travel from work ,to get the dinner in oven have my shower then eat and unwind post work all the while hearing some amazing tales .

This isn't exactly the right place to ask this question, but I didn't want to unnecessarily start a new thread. Who voiced the third Doctor's one line - one word, really - in "The Defectors"? That wasn't an early Tim Treloar appearance, was it?

The Primords-John Dorney Given That only Katy is the original surviving member these tales are such a success for me.I was sitting last night watching Planet Of The Daleks and felt a 3DA relisten was required. Not that i ever have to be persuaded to. Primords combines all the standard 3DA bringing Jo and Liz together and throw in The Primord menace and chuck in The Brig then really the only thing that could go wrong would be a lousy script and thankfully John Dorney delivers a wonderful tale Totally in keeping with its respective televised era.I guess Tim Treloar had the hardest thing in all of these adventures to do and he pulled it off wonderfully it is so easy to lose yourself in his portrayal. I have actually found while listening to a lot of the recasts after a few listens my brain seems to just click towards the original actor same with our new Sarah Jane and Harry the more i listen the better i visualise.
I am Glad they did these recasts now after all my initial reservations and as long as we keep getting quality scripts long may they continue.
