Doctor Who is NOT a literary character. Defeats the point of Book Week/Day. I would BAN any character that does not have a literary origin. And exclude a lot of people as a result - good for you! Not excluding at all. Its called Book Week/Day, shouldn't be difficult for kids to choose something that DOESN'T originate from a movie or tv show. If not just rebrand it as Fictional Character Week/Day.

Its called Book Week/Day, shouldn't be difficult for kids to choose something that DOESN'T originate from a movie or tv show. If not just rebrand it as Fictional Character Week/Day. There are TONS of great tie-in fiction books. VERY awesome books. Literary genius books. (I am especially looking at some of the Warhammer fiction in this regard)
It would be a shame not to include these. This is gatekeeping, plain and simple.
And it is not necessary bad literary quality because it has the label "Warhammer", since all these great authors have to earn money somehow. And if anyone ever read the books by Ian Watson or Peter Fehervari- the language! The cleverness! The bind-blowing experience!
Just imagine a kid going to school as a Warhammer character. I have a school teacher friend who would give them an instand A+++.
EDIT: That is not to say that sadly, MOST Warhammer fiction is dreadful and awful. But if you need recommendations to really good ones, PM me.

Asking kids to actually choose an original book character rather than their favourite tv show, toy, video game character that has had a tie-in book isn't gatekeeping. It is actually the point of the event.

I think the point is to get them to READ Casting my mind back thirty-odd years, I'm pretty sure that the purpose is to annoy the hell out of my mother by forcing her to come up with some kind of fancy dress for me.

Came home from LA last night, it was a great trip and I was very impressed with the new school.
Worked a 12 hour shift, and now I am stalling instead of packing for my trip to LI Who. I drive out after work tomorrow. But unfortunately, due to the fact that I still have no downloads populating in the app on my phone, I won't be able to listen to any BF on my 2-3 hour car ride to the hotel.

Regarding book week, in my opinion as a parent and sometimes teacher, anything that gets a kid to read is good, even if it's a comic book. It doesn't have to be a literary classic to qualify.

To continue on- I asked my boy if he wanted to dress up like "The Three Investigators" , either Jupiter Jones, Peter Crenshaw or Bob Andrews.. Just ask anyone in Germany about the history of these classic books... His teacher is German and she still listen to the audios every day at home and in the car with her children- we have had deep conversations about the impact this series has had on generations of children from the 60's/70's till now..
Junior is almost 1/2 way through book 4 of Harry Potter.. This series Will be around forever it hits all the themes that attracts children.

Of course Harry Potter is way cooler that Jupiter Jones. In all seriousness.

I would have whipped up some business cards "? ? ? " for him..

Jupe, Pete and Bob had some chalk and a partly-wrecked old trailer in a junkyard - and their wits! Yes I am biased as I was the right age for 'The Three Investigators' original run of books, so I sort of grew up in Rocky Beach.

I have been a fan since my youth and I am a bigger "Drei Fragezeichen" Fan than Who Fan. I am a MASSIVE crazy fan.
And still I say that Harry Potter as a character is cooler than Jupe (and Jupe is my favorite and I have him as background for my iPad - original signed drawing by one of the German authors).

No-one mentioned literary classics. The point from the schools that have asked not to use movie and TV characters is that they're not sure the children ARE actually reading more, just watching Marvel or Star Wars etc. That if they come dressed as a character from a book that isn't a world famous IP, there's more chance they're invested in reading and not just Disney+.

So I'm switching positions/shifts at work.
Good news is I'll have a better schedule and won;t have to talk to customers anymore
Bad news is I'll have to be on my feet more.
They said I could try it out for a week before deciding though, so that's good.

300 books! I only read the first 20. But they were fun though it does seem a long time ago now (because it is!)
I know the rest of the world cannot begin to compete with Germany when it comes to 'Three Investigators' fandom, but your collection must be impressive even by German fan standards!

Well, I have to explain in a few more sentences. Yes, I do have most of the main series books and specials. ON MY KINDLE. The hard copies fit on a normal shelving unit, and this includes the English original hard copy books. But many of the German hardcovers which I do have are signed copies of the German authors.
To cite Gollum: "My precioussss...."

It's stlll a fine collection. DL books count, even though I (being older) don't find them quite as satisfying as a 'real' book. Even if the words are the same!
