All the rooms have that ceiling bar the kitchen, which is flat, and after the friggin mess of having that one smoothed over the rest can stay as they are. Anyway who looks up at the ceiling? Yes my parents had it once on a wall strange wavy pattern luckily in spite of it they managed to sell Oh yes it's horrific on the walls, very 1970's. My sister had it in the hall, if you got too close on the way in or out you'd rip your arms to shreds. all my walls are as smooth as a babys bum

The benefit, as you say is the difference between Intrinsic and Extrinsic gains. It reminded me, that 10 years ago this month, I had my Graduation Ceremony for my Masters Degree, of which those two terms were explored within my Dissertation, as motivating factors for students seeking a qualification. My Headteacher (a not particularly nice Boss) later claimed that I had not made enough of it in terms of self promotion, but I got a strong Intrinsic benefit from it, as a more knowledgeable and confident practitioner. Plus having done it 100% in my own time and without funding by the school, I saw no reason to take on additional tasks on the cheap (volunteering to do staff development sessions), beyond influencing things within my own subject and department. Its what you get out it, not what it proves to others, that counts more. Just good qualifications can get you a better job (Extrinsic), what you learn and develop as a person is an Intrinsic benefit. So writing fiction or producing Art should always satisfy oneself first and foremost. Apologies for the usual self referencing tangent.. I definitely agree with this and it does satisfy me a lot, I guess too I have a massive almost overwhelming desire for others to see the things I write and create and for them to be fully realized. Its a natural and universal human characteristic, the need for Validation. Social media, such as Facebook & Twitter, is driven by people seeking validation of their fantastic lives or intellect. Similarly, when we have been doubted, or disregarded, recognition serves as a Vindication of our worth, talent or abilities. We unfortunately belong to a society where countless works and deeds go unrecognised or unappreciated whilst mediocrities get praise and benefits. Luck, privilege, favour and placement hold more currency than talent or ability, unfortunately...

Hello again.
Creativity is a powerful motivating force. People can't help making music, drawing or painting, writing, sewing and knitting, wood-turning it is what helps us deal with the stresses of the day. Self-promotion doesn't have to be the motivating factor. Well done Davros1 for completing your collection of short stories. Attempting to get anything published traditionally is really, really difficult for first time writers. I don't think I will be one of the talented few. However, there are many ways of getting your stories out there for people to read if you want to. Self-publishing, these days is not the same as vanity publishing and can be done as a interesting hobby. There are many writers whose work only exists as ebooks. There is much advice about this, Smashwords and Writers and Artists both explain the possibilties well.
Keep at it Timegirl. Writing and art take effort to learn your craft, every new piece of work even if it doesn't go anywhere is a learning experience. Why shouldn't you share your creations, you just need to find safe places where it will be appreciated. Even if it isn't, don't let it get you down. I find music is a good way of boosting my mood, obviously not Radiohead when I'm low, seriously Thom cheer up! Anyway, do let us know when you do have something and I hope you manage to enter the competition. Best wishes to all creatives on this site, wherever they be, you are not alone...
Ian, Barclay's a lovely dog, I'm glad you were the superhero who rescued him. Best wishes to you both.

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

The play I’ve been rehearsing for the past couple months opened. We had really good crowds despite the reduced seating, and the audiences (we did two shows yesterday) were very receptive.

Precisely. That’s exactly what I do when it comes to my little the reviews on the ‘What are you listening to today?’ thread although admittedly I think I sometimes try too hard to be wry and witty as well with my observations but that’s a bad habit I’m working towards overcoming.
