It's a tough choice, but I'd have to say Leela. She's got a lot of levels to her, there's no other companion quite like her, and she's played to perfection by Louise Jameson.
Frobisher and Charley are close seconds.

Sarah Jane Smith on television. Easy, hands-down, all-time favorite for me.
Putting a choice in second place is much, much harder, and I'm not sure I could do it, but Ian & Barbara, Vicki, Jamie, Jo Grant, the Brig, Leela, Romana, Nyssa, Tegan, Ace, Captain Jack, Donna, Amy & Rory, and probably a few others could lay claim to that spot.
On audio: Leela, Nyssa, Evelyn, and Charley are my favorites (in order by Doctor).

I have not posted in this thread cause I don't know how to decide! I like Jamie and Zoe, Sarah Jane, Leela, and Ace from the old series. And the Brigadier. Does he count as a companion? I got a kick out of Turlough. Peri has been great in audios. I like Frobisher, Evelyn, Hex, Fritz, and Benny from the novels and audios. In the new series I am a particular fan of Donna and Martha. And unlike many, I do like Clara, though I think more could have been done with her character.

Far easier to state the ones I don't care for. Adric, Donna, Hex.
I've always enjoyed Jaime and the Brig.

I'm going to cheat a little and go by companion teams...
1. Ian and Barbara 2. Jamie and Zoe 3. Liz 4. Sarah 5. Turlough 6. Evelyn (although Peri and Frobisher come really, really close) 7. Ace and Bernice 8. Izzy

My favorite Classic Who companion is Romana II. I can't really explain it, but out of any companion I felt like she was the most equal to the Doctor. Plus, the chemistry between Lalla and Tom - perfect!
On audio, it's a toss up between Evelyn, Charley, and Frobisher. I lean more towards Charley - her personality compliments the Eighth Doctor so well and she is wonderful with the Sixth Doctor as well.
As for NuWho, my favorite would have to be Donna. She was the first companion in NuWho without an obligatory romance subplot and her adventures with Ten were just so much fun to watch!

Such a difficult choice, but if I had to choose:
Classic - Sarah Jane, then Ian New - Donna (which is quite a surprise as I was really worried about Catherine Tate's casting), then Amy Audio - Evelyn, then Jamie, Steven
Cheers

Am I the only one that really liked Rory?
For me it's a tie between Rory and Donna.
I guess I really liked the dynamic Rory brought to the Amy/Doctor team.

Rory was pretty good. I'm not a huge fan of Amy, to tell the truth, but Rory did make that story line better.

Cheers Tony I loved Amy, I think that's much of the reason I dislike Clara. apart from season 8 Clara has been quite bland, whereas Amy bubbled with character. Also, legs.

Am I the only one that doesn't like Rose? I just thought her character was kind of boring to be honest. The funny thing is I hear stories about people falling in love with their "first" doctor. I started with Eccleston and Rose and thought David Tennant was an improvement.

I thought there were a number of good stories with her and both the Ninth and Tenth Doctors. But I don't love her the way some do. She was okay as a companion, not outstanding. I'm not sure why people think she was one of the best. I'm also not crazy about the Doctor and Companion in love story theme. I don't like it much with the Eighth Doctor and Charley, either, to be honest, though I did enjoy the Eight and Charley stories. I particularly disliked the way the Doctor treated Martha as the next companion because of Rose. Martha was a much more interesting companion, in my opinion, and she just got short shrift.
