Stay safe everyone. I know it’s a platitude at this point but we will get through this.

Well, I think that was all fair and reasonable. The delay in presentation was due to their hand being forced early by a leak. The situation is not isolated to the UK and there are measures of similar ilk elsewhere such as France, Germany & Belgium. There will be those who think it too late/too little/too much/following not leading/ignoring the science/beholden to one line of scientific thought etc... As noted by sympathetic press, he is in a no win situation. Too many Conservative voters with a capital 'C' have taken the purely Business & Economic case and repeatedly stated that increased cases were due to increased testing and deaths were still very low, so it must be in remission. That is clearly no longer the case. Damned if he does, Damned if he doesn't. Fair presupposition, but they do ensure all sides contribute and have not given Boris an easy ride despite him being a past Editor - Chairman Andrew Neil did after all give him the Sack when he took the helm. For every submission praising him there is an at least one other criticising him or at least expressing exasperation or disappointment at the open goals missed. Same goes for Brexit (Matthew Parris is very pro remain for example). And you only need to read their weekly sketch of PMQ's to see Keir Starmer frequently get a decent write up and some on side honesty at Boris winging it or blustering. Its just being constructive, whilst hoping he is reading himself.

'Lockdown II' had to mean 'Stay at Home II' (minus, as it turns out, more reasons to not stay at home this time) and I'd have thought at least the extension of furlough would have come as a pleasant policy surprise... 'Trick or treat, Minister...?'
I feel sorry for all the people hit by this in leisure and retail but for the rest of us, isn't it mostly a Lockdown on Fun? No general socialising, visiting or shopping for non-essentials.
But we should still go to work if we can't work from home, go to education, do essential shopping, keep routine medical appointments, do caring and volunteering, go out for exercise, even meet a friend outdoors in public & form 'support bubbles'. I can only speak from personal experience, but in busy family life with work and dependents to look after, that list just about describes normal life, at least Monday am to Friday pm. It baffles me where people get all the spare time to do anything else during the week!

And again the government has been dragged kicking and screaming to adopt a policy when it could have just conceded the point weeks ago and moved on. Sure all those loyal MPs who went out proclaiming Universal Credit was sufficient and the nonsense about nationalising kids will be thrilled at this about face.

Meanwhile the government’s vaccine tsar has been caught out in what seems a rather classic corruption case. Her misadventures include showing what seem to be non-public documents about the vaccine strategy to an event of venture capitalists, possibly lying to a select committee and spending hundreds of thousands of taxpayers’ money on a team of PR consultants for herself.

Ding, dong, Dom is gone. And for some reason has done a dumb stunt by leaving No 10 carrying a box to end his tenure.
