You know, now that you mention it, I actually do rather like Attack of the Cybermen ...

Cover now up on BF website.
Paul Darrow is credited on the cover and in the cast list on the website, which suggests Avon will "appear" via archive dialogue, rather than simply being an offscreen presence.

Do I spy Sheila 'Kassia' Ruskin on that excellent cover? I surely do!
I will really miss these 'Blake's 7' audios.

I guess later this month. I wonder if they just get Avon back in the final story and use some previously recorded lines to wrap his role up.

Well, Trevor Baxendale's Parasite was better than a Blake's 7 story without Avon should be. It didn't dwell too much on the absent crew-member, but there were some nice reflective moments between the characters and their remembrances. To misquote, my favourite line is (as usual) from Vila, when someone comments that they'll miss Avon. "Is that an order?" asks Vila: terrific. If the BBC ever made episodes without Paul Darrow, then I feel this is how they would have done it. Lovely performances from the regulars and guest cast, and some really lovely wistful music from Simon Power. All in all, a great opener for this final set which isn't without melancholy, but is more concerned with telling a good solid story - which is exactly what I imagine the late Mr Darrow would have wanted.

It strikes me while listening to this that Steve Lyons' Failsafe features only one original cast-member - Steven Pacey. And apart from Tarrant and Dayna, the vast majority of other characters are creations of Big Finish - Mordekain, Shana and The President. I know there have been a lot of audio Blake's 7 stories by this time, but it's a showcase of the skill involved that all characters mesh together so easily. Once more, Hugh Fraser's tricksy President is at the centre of things, his safety taking on great relevance to the story - and there's a good twist late on that gives extra weight to his survival. But these characters are audio-only: they don't crop up on television. So they are 'expendable', and that gives an edge to events here. Big Finish have built up a good support for the regulars and it is fun seeing where the stories take them.

Just marathoned the box set and I really loved it! All the stories were really strong and the whole restoration arc was really good! ‘Imperium’ especially was such a good conclusion, the last 10 minutes had me beaming from ear to ear, what an end to an era!!

So how much is Paul Darrow / Avon actually in this box set? i thought i heard that he'd completed his recordings before his sad passing?

The answer is a bit of a spoiler but if you want to know: {Spoiler} Avon appears in the last 15 mins of “Imperium” and actually appears/says more in it more than you expect. Due to us knowing Paul didn’t record anything for this boxset you can tell it is all pre recorded dialogue but it works well in my opinion. I won’t spoil any more cause there is another surprise when you listen.

Reunion by David Bryher.
The unmistakable musical tones of Nigel Fairs ushers this in, and one thing dawns on me. After the character of Selene Shan was initally given the sadly departed Jacqueline Pearce's Servalan lines, in this set, she seems to be a surrogate Avon. A necessary situation given recent tragic real-life events, and Evie Dawnay makes a good stab at making her continuing character appealing, albeit an unknown quantity. Vila is given a good opportunity for some good claustrophobic solitary panicking here, and credit to Michael Keating for carrying a lengthy scene on his own, before he meets up with an old friend justifying this story's title. Of the two plot strands, I think Vila's is my favourite here - although it is good hearing the others fighting a frightening, honest-to-goodness monster. I do feel that recent Blake's 7 audios have been a bit monster-lite, and Alistair Lock's robotic killer is a memorable one.
Three stories down, and I've really enjoyed them all. One left, and then it's all over.

Imperium by Trevor Baxendale.
Exceptional. What an end to a terrific boxset. To anyone on the fence about purchasing a Blake's 7 release without new material from Paul Darrow, I strongly recommend it. Well done to all concerned.

I just finished listening to the back half of Imperium, plus the extras on the way to and from work today. I knew BF would have to bring Avon back in some manner, because BF Respects Canon rather more than a lot of franchise holders do these days. What they came up with, well, it worked well and was rather not what I was expecting. The third story, if I was going to give it a sub-title, it would be {Spoiler}Vila Grows A Pair.
