TRAILER TONIGHT FOLKS! On the Graham Norton Show, you know, the programme all the kids watch... Publicity Genius Past 10PM on a show where the Host treats the program and its audience with disdain. Regards mark687 Capaldi and Jodie have both been on Norton to promote the show. Graham just plays the panto-villain given his twice accidental intrusion into the show, acting like he was behind it. It's as mainstream exposure as you'll get tonight. The kids can watch tomorrow. After all, it's not like Marvel or DC only drop trailers when they know kids are up. If it's good enough for them...

What a trailer! I’m definitely excited. (Side note: is it maybe time to split off a “general discussion” thread for those who want to discuss officially revealed content from the trailers and posters without spoilers/rumours/2022 stuff?)

It's a very choppy trailer so it's hard to judge much but it certainly seems to have lots of scope and scale.

Choppy's a good word here. I feel like the commitment to secrecy does leave it lacking a throughline: yes all the returning monsters look great and the scale is nuts (this may well be the absolute best Who has ever looked in its near 60 year history, and that this was achieved during a pandemic - round of applause), but do I have much of a sense of the story of Flux? What's the war? Who is, broadly, the big bad? What's the Doctor and crew's journey and goal beyond stop this war? What if they fail? What's grabbing me beyond being a fan and having all these nostalgia buzzers?

If someone can find the music used in this trailer I would be eternally thankful. Until then, I'll have a look on Audio Network (Their music has been used on tons of the Chibnall era trailers so far.)

The bony aliens do resemble the Sycorax somewhat. Perhaps a relative?

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

I’ve only watched the trailer once but there’s a real sense of history being mucked about with and a story being told across several parts of history which have been interfered with so much that the Doctor doesn’t recognise it. The Sontaran on horseback and the pitched battle with infantrymen and cavalry mixed with laser blasts gives a pretty good sample of what’s happening. Although I suspect it’s not going to be as simple as “Sontarans perverting the course of history.” As others have said, it looks amazing: I have loved the look of this era. Each episode has looked amazing and really does hold its own compared to other, glossier shows. This season looks to be no exception.

Reading this comment made me come to a realization about the issues I've had with the Chibnall era: it likes to ask questions but none of the questions have any sort of intriguing through line. Like when telling a Doctor Who story (or any story) you need to get the audience of a story to be asking the questions to keep them invested and that has to start with what the story is. We should have some idea of what the inciting incident is and we just kind of don't.

We should have some idea of what the inciting incident is and we just kind of don't. I'd normally agree but with other-Who stories, now we know that this series and the specials are it for Jodie and Chris, I don't know how much it matters now. Obviously we all want good Doctor Who but his approach to promotion is well known, not even doing DWM columns like everyone since JNT has. He expects, it seems, people to tune in because it's Doctor Who. I think whenever the show has relied on that, it's not done ratings any good. But again, it's all reset in 9 stories (or 4 if this is more like one big serial) and then it's RTD's issue, and I guarantee you one thing - we'll know more about his era 2 weeks out from the start! The surprise is nice but, as I always say, we're watching anyway. What's getting the occasional watchers to tune in? RTD would spoil enough to hook you...then give you something you didn't see coming (like Billie popping up in Partners In Crime) but this trailer looks great, has pace, action, scale...is that enough to get the audiences on Halloween and the week beyond in ratings? Do the BBC care as much now they know they're getting their biggest gun back next year? Time'll tell.
