I have to add my state is Bavaria, and old traditional Bavarians in the South are VERY proud of their facial hair. So that means they either shave it off or don't go shopping until COVID dies down.... OMG hell no.. You can't dictate facial hair..! Yeah, that's... won't say it... musn't say it... facial fascism. Sorry. I'll get my coat and go hang out with the conspiracy theorists. I'm Austrian-Bavarian on my father's side. I think much has been explained this day, lol. Not sure it's that I'm so proud of it but sort of unthinkable to be without it somehow. Glad to get that sorted, I thought maybe I was Bohemian So sorry to hear things are going that way over there. Wishing you all the peace and sanity you can get.

Looks as if all my heroes are going to make an effort to be around a while longer.

So, I had a bit of an interesting week... My pain threshold tends to be fairly high, I don't typically notice something until I pass out or fall over. I had a funny turn while walking and it's the kind of sensation where you feel like someone's just stabbed you in the spinal column. Six feet tall, just dropped to the concrete. Whumph.
No, it's not COVID. As it turns out, it was all the muscles in my shoulder blades seizing all at once.
I'd rolled back by shoulders and something just clenched in place. I suspect it's one of 2020's little artefacts from that quarantine period. Too much of one thing for an extended period. I'm seeing the physiotherapist a few days from now to deal with the problem, but I've taken it as impetus to basically pick up top rope climbing again. A lot of its to do with your legs anyway, so back problems aren't really too much an issue. I haven't done it in ten years, but I'm discovering I haven't lost the knack which is nice.

Hello again.
Sorry to hear that Wolfie, hope the physio is able to improve things. Top rope climbing? I'm impressed as someone who was the worst person at PE at school. Writing my PE reports were always gave my PE teachers a great deal of amusement. Classic lines like, "he has a distinct lack of coordination" and "Daley Thompson has nothing to worry about" were two such gems.
Rope climbing was a physical impossibilty for me, tree-climbing no worries, how high does these ropes go? Anyway, best wishes and hope things are better soon.

Thanks for the best wishes. I think my problem isn't dexterity, I was once asked if I had hollow bones, it's just getting the muscles to do what I tell them to do. At the end of the day, I was being belayed (that's lowered on the rope) by a friend of mine and was so tired I just sank to the ground and sat there like Winnie-the-Pooh holding his red balloon.

On Friday night my sister called to tell me that she had tested positive for Covid last Wed with a rapid test, but then she tested negative with a rapid test on Friday. She's waiting for the longer PCR test that she took Friday to come back. I went for a walk with her last Sunday, so if she really was positive that I could have been exposed. I went for a test yesterday, rapid and PCR. The rapid came back negative, so that's a plus.

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

I had a really long post ready to go but it felt a little... naff.. and frankly it boiled down to “please look after yourselves and take care.” Just that. I hope everyone is being as mindful and safe as possible.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the daily figure is basically - yesterday's total, less the number of positive cases 2 weeks and one day ago, plus positive cases yesterday. Excellent news that it is going down in the vast majority of areas. But. This is only the number of people with symptoms who bothered to get themselves tested at a centre where the results take a few days and are pretty much accurate. It cannot by definition include people who are asymptomatic carriers and spreaders, or people with false negative results, or people who for one reason or another have chosen not to get their symptoms tested because they'd rather believe it's just a cold and are scared that they might end up in hospital dying alone. (*glares at the old boy three doors along*) Truthfully, the detected infection rate is going to have to get to pretty much zero with everyone having antibodies by one means or another before we can think about 'normalcy'. Whatever that might look like going forward. I'll be the old biddy wearing a cloth mask every winter at least from now on. Great way to slow down getting colds and flu! (along with the jab)

Apparently the Prime Minister is now saying schools will be going back on the 8th March at the latest.
To quote the Chuckle Brothers ‘Oh dear, oh dear...’

I thought he said they could be going back on March the 8th at the earliest That is the case. A lot of pressure from Teachers, Pupils and Parents to get back to School. Opposition voices are demanding a fixed timescale and plan, but deviations or delays will be cast as another U-turn, hence the commitment only to a phased return at this stage: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-55828952

So I'm sure everyone's heard by now of the German furor over Astrazeneca's vaccine, and deciding not to give to over 65s, for the time being. As I strive to be a calming voice on this thread, I'm going to leave politics at the door and instead combat misinformation. Brig raised it in a different thread, so I'll put up my response here as well: the 'only 8% effective in over 60s' bit was actually due to a misread of the existing data and isn't correct. What's more, the data we have thus far (here's a piece from medical journal The Lancet) says the Astra vaccine works on this group. www.businessinsider.com/oxford-astrazeneca-vaccine-older-people-study-effective-german-government-2021-1?r=US&IR=Twww.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(20)32623-4/fulltextIt's important to be clear that Germany isn't saying any version of 'The vaccine sucks and is completely useless', but rather 'we'd like to have some more data (which is coming, thanks to the US trial)'. Big difference.

So it appears that there is NIL cases in all of Australia at the moment as of yesterday's official Govt release of figures. I will have to double check that because I know that is the case in my home state 100%.

Big difference. Don't get me started on Germany and our fabulous government and their astounding leadership. They are just looking for a scapegoat for their incompetence (concering their inability to negotiate with the company in a timely manner).
I am having whiplash from shaking my head.
Also, Germany's astounding shortsightedness concerning virus sequencing. In December 2019 (8 weeks before the droppings hit the fan), our virology board warned the health minister that this was necessary to create more options and to provide more money for sequencing.
We never really did this, the "health minister" ignored this.
So we have no clue if we have mutations, and where they are and how many. Our whole endless lockdown "plan" is a complete walk in the dark. It would be recommended to sequence at least 5% of all positive samples. So that means, of 10000 positive samples, 500 get sequenced.
As of beginning of January, a shocking 70 (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) have been sequenced.
Sorry, but I cannot take anyone of these clowns serious anymore. And the more they cry about other people, the more it reflects on them.
