DWM has always been a consistently brilliant read, but the latest issue, 550, is exceptional. What a real labour of love by the team and their tributes to the excellent Season 14.
From Chris Chibnall’s anecdotes of having Philip Hinchcliffe on set, to how Doctor Who in 1976 was front and centre during a golden age of telly. The Season 14 diary is a fascinating insight into how big the show was at the time, on par with 2005, 2008, 2010 or 2013 in recent memory.
An interview with Michael E Briant offers an interesting overview of the making of The Robots of Death and I think he’s spot on: it’s a pedestrian sounding script that excels thanks to some great set design, costumes and direction to become one of the all time greats.
The Deadly Assassin and Robert Holmes’ defence of it shows just how opinion can change over the years. Once panned, it’s now thought of as a stone cold classic. It’s not often talked about, but Holmes and his portrayal of the Time Lords isn’t exclusive to The Deadly Assassin. In fact, Genesis of the Daleks and The Brain of Morbius can join it to form a loose trilogy of sorts.
And that’s not even discussing all the extras included with this issue! A freebie of Big Finish’s very own The Devil’s Armada, a make your own TARDIS console room, a Talons of Weng-Chiang poster and a souvenir supplement. My favourite of all are the collectible art cards that come with it. I like to pretend they came free with my box of Yorkshire Tea that I bought just before we went into lockdown...
Thank you for the great read, DWM, particularly in these troubled times.
