Hello again. Ah yes, Human Nature/Family of Blood. Probably my favourite NuWho story. The atmosphere, the peerless direction by Charles Palmer, the acting performances particularly of the the TARDIS crew, Jessica Hynes and Harry Lloyd. I love Murray Gold's score for this story, the Martha's plaintive bicycle ride, the sinister scarecrow march, Joan's theme and the dance music at the village hall. The themes of the story mean for me I see something else every time I watch it: the futility of war, duty, the importance of each individual life, justice and punishment and above all remembrance. Remembrance of all those who have given their lives to defend, protect, help and look after others whether they be soldier, nurse, or Doctor...

I remember being at a Q&A with Cornell a few years ago and said i wished the finger reveal from the books had been used in the episodes. We both agreed it would have been a cool visual

I remember being at a Q&A with Cornell a few years ago and said i wished the finger reveal from the books had been used in the episodes. We both agreed it would have been a cool visual I suspect that change was likely due to the BBC being understandably reluctant to have the Doctor's finger get bitten off at teatime on BBC One. Having recently reread the book, I have to confess I still prefer it to the TV version, principally because I think the odd alien seventh Doctor who doesn't understand the "little" kind of love is a better fit for the story than the romantic hero of the tenth Doctor, but I think both are wonderful stories (The scarecrows are a great monster and the fob watch feels much more Doctor-y than a cricket ball.) and I'm very happy with to accept that they somehow both happened as the brilliant Shadow of a Doubt says. The Doctor's life is a mess of contradictions and just because two things contradict each other doesn't mean they can't both be true. I think Murray Gold's music for these episodes was some of his best as well. And that's saying a lot.
