This is just for fun but which non DW fictional characters would make the best companions for the Doctor? You can also pare them up with specific incarnations as well!
Mine: Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire (A Series of Unfortunate Events):They are all super smart, mature and resourceful. They each have their own special skills with inventing, research, and biting/culinary skills. They also have a long history of adventures and escaping villains themselves so they would be equipped for the kind of life of a companion! They could easily be paired with any incarnation of the Doctor!
Bill and Ted(Bill and Ted movies): They would be best friends with 12! They are good natured rockers and experienced time travelers! They could rock out with 12 as well as help him to mellow out when he gets uptight.
Steve and Dustin (Stranger Things): They are a good dynamic duo who have plenty of experience with the supernatural/otherworldly, they would be good with any Doctor!
Indiana Jones: This is a no brainer! Any Doctor!
Sherlock and Watson (Moffat’s Sherlock): Another no brainer!
Angus Flint ( Lair of the White Worm): As a companion for 12! Yes, this would be incredibly meta to have 12 teamed up with another Peter Capaldi character! But, Angus is Peter’s most Doctory pre-DW role! He’s smart, socially awkward and he can play an instrument (bagpipes), I think 12 would take Angus on because he sees himself in him!
Sam Tyler (Life on Mars): Smart and caring with a code of honor similar to the Doctor. Would be interesting to have him as 10’s companion due to the potential subtext of him looking a lot like the Master!
Arthur Dent(Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy) No brainer! Pair him up with 4!
Belle (Beauty and the Beast): She did want to travel to the great wide somewhere! Not sure which incarnation but probably a New Who Doctor!
Sara (Labryinth): Holds her own in strange otherworldly environments! Not sure which incarnation I would pair her with.
Which non DW fictional characters do you think would make the best companions? And is there a certain Doctor you would pair them up with?

Peter Grant and Nightingale of course! (of the Rivers of London series) I wonder if magic would work in the TARDIS or if it was inhibited by the temporal grace field? And how very advanced science would explain magic?

And how very advanced science would explain magic? Definitely! And all intriguing questions! The TARDIS would probably be even more unpredictable than usual! Also did you know Nightingale was based on Paul McGann? So Nightingale would be 8’s doppelgänger!

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

Sam Vimes of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch (Terry Pratchett’s Discworld novels) Paired with any Doctor. I think he would secretly love the Doctor’s anarchic nature going up against some of the more bureaucratic and hidebound of the Doctor’s adversaries.

Yes Rivers of London was originally planned as a tv series rather than a book series and the writer wanted Paul McGann to play Nightingale😀

I feel like the Frankenstein’s Monster would make for a good companion for the Doctor. I think the Doctor would recognise that it is an outcast and merely a victim of events out of its control. Not to mention, I feel like the Doctor would try his best to find the Monster a home among the stars. A place for it to belong if you will.

I think War and the Ninth would probably be able to empathise with it the best. They’ve both done some pretty terrible things in their time. I’d imagine the pair of them sitting together in the Arctic waste discussing what it means to be a Monster. I’m imagining the Doctor offering him a place in the TARDIS and the Monster being reluctant. Unsure of whether it deserves a second chance after what it has done. As the Doctor enters the TARDIS, he offers a last remark with: ‘You don’t have to be alone. Not if you don’t want to be.’ There is a pause as he waits in the TARDIS. Then comes a small knocking on the door. The Doctor smiles.

I think the Monster would have mixed opinions when it comes to the Cybermen. Much like how he is a distortion of humanity they are almost a parody of his father’s/creator’s dream. A simulacrum of humanity. Walking effigies made of metal and steel but yet much like himself lacking that specific something. He’d probably be fascinated by them all things considered but it would be a fascination tinged with the slightest bit of horror.
Daleks would definitely horrify him. Mainly as to how creatures fuelled by nothing more than pure hatred can exist. Watching them slaughter millions merely for existing would probably bring him to tears as he can only ask:
“Why?”
In any case, I feel once his travels with the Doctor come to an end he would take up residence on an alien planet somewhere, far, far away from Earth and (much like a certain character from the Mortal Engines which I won’t spoil) become a storyteller, immortal, un aging , watching over each new generation of the community he finds himself a part of telling them stories of his creation and the adventures of a very special man he is honoured to call his friend.
I’m imagining that by this point he would have finally found himself a name and although he would live on the outskirts of the village/town he would still be visited and thought of fondly by the inhabitants. And from time to time, he would hear that familiar wheezing sound and be visited by his old friend.

I couldn't see him as a formal Companion because they're too alike to fit into the Doctor/Companion roles - but I would love an adventure for the Third Doctor/Jo and (*TV) Adam Adamant/Georgina! The two Adventurer/Companion pairs are definitely close relations in the multiverse of 1960s BBC programme making...
'What is this place? I thought it was a Police Telephone Box but this is a wonder beyond any I have yet seen. And this may sound strange sir, but have I had the pleasure of your acquaintance? I ask because you seem oddly familiar...'
'This, sir, is my TARDIS and - oh no you're not me are you? I do find those parallel dimension events a bore. So complicated to sort out, and too many eyepatches.' 'Zoink!! What have you got me into this time Adam - and who's the groovy old guy in the cool clothes? Oh... he's not your father is he?' 'I can assure you young lady, I am nobody's father - well, not recently at least, and you are trespassing! And as for "old", age cannot be judged by appearances!' 'I'll say! I'm I sorry I was rude. I'll bet you're younger than Adam anyway!' 'I would be very surprised if - Adam? Do I have the honour of addressing Mr. Adam Adamant?' 'You do sir.' 'Your reputation preceeds you. But may I ask what you are doing in -' 'Hey Doctor, what's all the chat about - oh no they're not us are they?! Sort of different us, you know?' 'No Jo, not this time. And yet, in a strange sort of way, I feel they almost might have been...'
(* I emphasised 'TV' because they are very different characters in BF's audio, especially Georgina. On TV, I think she was definitely the creative ancestor of part of Jo Grant, as 'AAL' was part-ancestor of the Pertwee era in general.)

Snufkin from the Moomins. Now, which incarnation would suit him best to travel with?

Sherlock Holmes (Jeremy Brett) during his time after he faked his death between The Final Problem & return in The Empty House. The Doc (6) in the Watson role, for once not the smartest man in the room!
