Can anyone explain cucumber sandwiches to me? During my time in NZ, I did encounter them and they always struck me as weird. Albeit not as weird as spaghetti in toast, which would be classed as a crime against humanity in Germany. Why cucumber of all things? Is this a thing from the war? Is this from a time they could not find anything more tasteless to put on toast? I am not the biggest fan of cucumber to start with, but to have it take centre stage on my sandwich, without much more to support it, just feels weird to me. Ah...for that you can blame the British class system, the Victorians and the Edwardians.. www.hhhistory.com/2016/08/english-tea-history-of-cucumber-sandwich.htmlAs a child I can remember my grandmother "going posh" and doing cucumber sandwiches whenever she used to have friends or family members visiting her for tea (her dog merrily devoured the contents of my sandwich whenever she wasn't looking). Bland by itself for sure, but throw in either tuna or salmon with a dash of mayo... As for spaghetti on toast being "a crime against humanity" in Germany, I raise a quizzical eyebrow and a stiff upper lip to your comment against this staple of British Sunday teatimes, and respond in kind with but a single word : Zugenwurst. 😉😂 Ahh. Okay. Thanks for the info.
Well, I happen to like Zungenwurst. Especially the one from my region, in a nice layer of our regionally spiced black pudding, all of it stuffed into a pigs stomach and first cooked and then smoked. Just like my grandma used to make. From our organic happy free ranging pigs from my grandma's farm.
You just had not had a chance to taste the good stuff yet!

Spaghetti on toast is great! Each to their own.
Still willing to share my Zungenwurst, though.

I'm with tuigirl on cucumber sandwiches. I like cucumbers in a salad, on falafel, pickled, etc. I don't get it. And I never even knew spaghetti on toast was a thing. Ugh!

Yes, spaghetti on toast is a thing. As ridiculous as it sounds. It was a very common thing for my flatmates when I was studying in NZ. Needless to say, my teasing knew no end.
Plus, when my brother went to the UK for school exchange, he came home traumatized since the first meals his host family gave him was spaghetti on toast.

I must confess I’ve never been particularly fond of cucumbers. In sandwiches or anywhere else.
One food I do recall from my childhood though and something my Nan used to do for us when we were little. Sliced bananas on toast. Delicious.

Anyone having a sunday roast today? Sadly no. But I had a nice pile of food from my mum last weekend. Today I think I will again go with my takeaway pizza from the local restaurant to keep them afloat.
They make the best pizza around here, with all fresh ingredients, nothing from a can, and their sauce is just perfect.

I wanted to ask for a while- I have never seen field salad/ lambs lettuce in English speaking countries. As food I mean. Sold in supermarkets. It is a very common weed over here, and everybody has it growing in their gardens. You can buy it in bucket loads in the supermarkets. It is the most popular green salad in my region. I absolutely love the mild nutty taste. Do you know what I am talking about? Do you like it?

Yesterday I made a pot of Morrocan spiced butternut squash bisque. It's delicious.
