There have been a whole bunch of these X or Y polls in the TV section and after relistening to Chimes today, I wondered which of the two Rob Shearman Classics everyone prefered!
For me, I think it's Holy Terror in a photo finish. It edges forward with Frobisher and a slightly tighter story, but it's not a choice I make lightly! (And ask me again later, I might change my mind!)
So what does everyone else prefer? Gumblejacks or grandfather clocks?!

Edward Grove is... infinitely better.
Although the two stories do the same basic plot of people being trapped in a looping pseudo-reality, 'The Chimes of Midnight' does it with good humour and ultimately goodwill.

Both are absolutely deserving of their fantastic reputation but I personally have to go with The Chimes of Midnight for this one. It balances horror with Shearman’s black humour so well and is also infinitely quotable.

Chimes Of Midnight purely for the plum pudding. Absolutely, Christmas wouldn't be Christmas with Mrs Baddeley's plum pudding.

I'd actually go for The Holy Terror, because it was the first BF audio to actually stop me doing what I was doing (chores) and concentrate fully on the story. Brilliant, Mervyn Peak-like setting, some wonderful acting (Peter Guinness, Roberta Taylor and especially Sam Kelly) and a fantastical, very moving ending.
All that said, it's hard to relegate The Chimes of Midnight - one of the most celebrated Big Finish stories ever - to second place. The Christmas setting adds to the atmosphere perfectly - however, I guessed the mystery behind Edward Grove, and in The Holy Terror, I hadn't a clue what was going on until the big reveal.
So to choose one above the other is like choosing one favourite thing over another favourite thing. But The Holy Terror just does it for me!

I adore The Holy Terror. When I first listened, I was just floored - I didn’t realize Doctor Who was capable of this kind of storytelling. I love the sense of humor this story has and how it disarms you for when the dark undertones take over. That ending was the most shocking and tragic I had ever heard in any medium. Of course, this story also introduced me to Frobisher, perhaps the most unique companion I had ever known up to that point - I was used to (and quite bored with) New Who’s approach to companions at the time. Based on just how much I adored him in this story, I’ve wanted him to return ever since.
Chimes is equally as good: it’s one of the first Big Finish Eighth Doctor stories I ever heard - probably THE first Eighth Doctor story I’d ever heard. It’s stuck with me as the standard by which every Eighth Doctor story since has been judged. When I think of how I fell in love with audio dramas, this was one of the stories that played a big part in doing that. I love the atmosphere, the performances, the mystery. If The Holy Terror speaks to my love for things like Monty Python, then Chimes speaks to my love for things like Agatha Christie.
I love both stories quite a lot. But if I had to choose, it’s gotta be Chimes.

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

I absolutely adore both! Chimes was my very first big finish and Holy Terror was my second. They are both incredibly imaginative, darkly comedic, and surprisingly heartbreaking. I find Chimes a little more repetitive but that’s kind of the point. Both have amazing plot twists! I think Terror’s twists were bit less predictable but both made me teary eyed. I love the bizarre comedic death scenes in Chimes! I love the grotesque residents of the castle in Holy Terror. As for the companions, I enjoy Charley, but Frobisher has to be one the funniest and most original and memorable companions ever created for DW! They both have amazing atmosphere with Edward Grove and the Castle.
I think it’s a tie for me!

Found both stories ok. But as Holy Terror was my introduction to Frobisher will go with that.
