Is it possible that the 'Salamander' line in the opening line of Paul McCartney's song Getting Closer featured on the Wings' album Back to the Egg is a reference to the character in Enemy of the World? Say you don't love him, My Salamander
Why do you need him?
Oh no, don't answer, oh no
I'm getting closer
I'm getting closer to your heartIt would make sense if the song is making reference to a love rival that's a near doppleganger of the singer himself (?). I thought about this years ago before the episode was even discovered. I have to say that I used to ponder what the line might mean when the song came out and it wasn't until I read Ian Marter's novelisation of the story as a teen. I'd be interested if anyone knows if this is the case or if they know that McCartney has explained the lyrics at some point. It just seems really nonsensical even for McCartney to use the word Salamander in a pop song clearly about relationship woes.

It's one of Macca's lyrics that gets a lot of attention but usually get filed under "he couldn't think of anything better..."!
But, frankly, no-one should delete this post - if only because it gives us a chance to see your AMAZING avatar!

I've sometimes thought that Magneto and Titanium Man is evidence that Sir Paul sometimes makes pop culture references in his songs. But I agree that a lot of his lyrics can be nonsensical.
