One of the poster boys for bad video game films, as well as one of the first. It's such a weird duck of a film that repurposes and rethinks the characters and world in a way that you wonder if anyone involved even liked the games to begin with.
Yet, I find it really fascinating. I like Hoskins and Leguizamo. I even like the weird sets from the same designers as Blade Runner. Anyone else?

Also, Dennis Hopper is weirdly watchable here, even though it's a bad role. I mean, he's Hopper so expected odd, but he makes the bizarre 'jokes' work, like all the puns.
And 'Monkey!'

The only way I could possibly describe this film is that it wouldn’t be so bad if it wasn’t about the Mario Bros.

The template for horrifically bad game-to-film adaptations.

The template for horrifically bad game-to-film adaptations. True, though I think most movies of video games are awful.

Similar thinking here in that its an Ok slim but the whole genre and choices of video games for live action adaptations is odd. I've never been a Gamer but the only one i think could really work and they still haven't done it is Zelda.
Plus they nearly always attach odd Actors to them
Hoskins
Hopper
Raul Julia

I really enjoy it for cheesy switch off your brain fun
Also when you consider the amount of different drafts and ideas that were thought up, before we even got near this reiteration. The tone even changed halfway through production lol

Apart from Hoskins as Mario remember very little about it. Video games don't seem to turn into good movies and tend to gets lots of negativity as soon as are announced. So how bad it actual is is likely exaggerated.
Just checked out the trailer and it looks crazy.

Generally they're panned by fans because the filmmakers show zero interest in adapting the game/story that they like and just make a cheap/lazy cash-in movie, and then also panned by general audiences for being just plain bad movies. There really is no silver lining to the vast, vast majority of video game movie adaptations.

I thought the movie was fantastic! Not the response I expected, given what's in your name.

Hoskins a few years after Roger Rabbit seems pretty perfect casting to me, honestly. There's also some lovely art direction in the dystopian city scapes, clearly someone wanting to "do a Blade Runner". Yet...futuristic cities, Goombas with big bodies and little heads and a humanoid Bowser? If you're too embarassed to work on a property that you need to change everything bar the main characters...maybe don't sign up.
Even as a kid this one bored me. Gimme the same year's Demolition Man if I have to pick a good cheesy actioner. Ach well, there was always the Super Mario cartoon...
