I'll be posting reviews here for The Avengers radio series which transmitted between 6 December 1971 and 28 December 1973 on Springbok Radio, the English-language service radio of South Africa. The Avengers were played by two British actors, Donald Monat as Steed and Diane Appleby as Mrs Peel, with Hugh Rouse as the witty narrator between scenes. Only 20 stories have been 'found' from the series, one of which (Escape in Time) is only partially recovered. All Done by Mirrors
Somebody is leaking secrets from the Carmadoc research institute and suspicion falls upon Steed, who has been spending time there to help them with their security set-up. He is accordingly put under rather luxurious house arrest with Mother, spending his hours drinking champers whilst floating on an inflatable in the pool.
Mrs Peel teams up with the straight-laced Watney Watney to investigate not only the leaked secrets, but a couple of strange deaths where the only clues are broken mirrors at the scene.
The trail soon leads to a mysterious lighthouse where the (of course) eccentric 'Colonel' resides with his posh, well-educated man servant and a rugged fisherman.
Sound quality = 5 out of 10, but it gets better by episode 4 and despite the poor early sound you soon tune-out anyway because this is great fun. And all is forgiven anyway because it was probably restored from old reel tape....and it's 50 years old!
Story Rating = 7.5 out of 10.

Not too be Sneezed At.
The great and the good E.N.T. (ear, nose, throat) specialists of Harley Street are being bumped off one by one, by...a deadly fit of sneezing.
The only clue is each of them have received a personally addressed cream envelope that has nothing inside.
All are delivered by a man dressed as a postman who travels in the back of a vintage Rolls Royce.
Steed and Peel are despatched to find out why someone has a grudge against the finest doctors in the land.
Sound Quality = 6 out of 10
Story Rating = 7 out of 10.

Super Secret Cypher Snatch
Our protagonists investigate the disappearance of one of their colleagues at a Government facility, but why does nobody remember him being there? And why do the staff think it has been raining at lunch time....in fact, raining during every lunch time?
Maybe the answer lies with a top-notch window cleaning company with more than just shammy leathers in their buckets.
One of my favourites, with great incidental music.

It has been ages since I listened to these. I'll have to relisten to them.
Donald Monat and Dianne Appleby were very good as Steed and Mrs Peel. The only thing I recall finding a bit odd was that many (most?) of the surviving stories were based on TV episodes with Tara King. This resulted in Emma coming across as an experienced agent in some stories but adopting some of Tara's characteristics as a young inexperienced agent fresh out of spy school in others!

What, or whom, is murdering high-flying executives...and is seemingly capable of reducing solid oak doors to match-wood and bending shotguns??
Steed and Mrs Peel investigate, and the trail leads to a karate school.
