After 23 years, Holby City (for non-UK forum members, think lower budget Grey's Anatomy) is ending, supposedly as part of a refresh of the BBC's drama slate, with 2 new soap dramas set in other parts of the UK to take its place over the next few years.
It's easy to sneer and be gleeful that a soap is ending, or that you haven't 'liked it in years' or that its gone 'downhill', but it should be borne in mind that Holby was one of the few shows left of its ilk (a returnable drama series with lots of hours of content) and provided work for both veterans as well as for industry newcomers, very much including writers (your next favourite Who writer could've cut their teeth here). When one of the soaps (or Continuing Dramas, as they're dubbed here) goes, that's an entire chunk of the UK TV ecosystem gone with it that these new shows may not be able to fill. All the strength to the current team, as it seems like many were not aware of this happening.

Its not something I have watched over the years, but one less Drama series from the Terrestrial channels (particularly BBC1) is not a good step. Hopefully they will be looking to replace it. Perhaps they may be interested in a reboot of Blakes 7? It always was a solid midweek Drama serial. A bit less fantastically plotted despite the outer space setting, but there's always scope for serial killers played by the McGann brothers to spice things up...

Whilst I will say that it's been a while since I watched it regularly (what with university and working Tuesday evenings), it'll be sad to see it go...

Haven't watched it in years Is this an opportunity for BF? Funny you mention this, as I just learnt Phil Mulryne writes on Holby.
How about that.

Haven't watched it in years Is this an opportunity for BF? IF Nick didn't hate Procedural or "Soap" Drama. I mean granted "Family Affairs" wasn't the best example to be trying to write for but to hate the whole Genre because of it. Regards mark687

Putting aside that, from what I'm hearing, the staff only got an hour's notice before the press release, but not having the 2 replacement(s) at some stage of development where something could be said about what they are to let people know where future work could lie is also not good.

The replacements were mentioned in the BBC release, saying that that was why Holby was being taken down: to make room for two news dramas, one up north and another in 'the regions' (like I said, vague and not all that helpful). Supposedly, the northern soap is meant to compete with ITV's ones.

Well actually WR is going to be filmed in Scotland, whether its being funded by the money "saved and redistributed" by ending Holby isn't clear. Regards mark687

Regards mark687 Oh Mark, never do a "Well actually..." without reading first! The article said quite clearly near the top "The new series of Waterloo Road will be set and made in Greater Manchester" - it did move to Scotland for the last couple of seasons but it's going home again.

Regards mark687 Well the top of the article does say one of two shows to benefit from a new investment initiative (the same reason Holby was canned and number of replacements, as you'll recall), but here's another BBC article confirming the link: www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-58662762
