It's been forty years since Martin Bannister encountered the Doctor. They were different men back then. Martin was young and talented and The Times' seventh most promising writer to watch out for. The Doctor was mysterious, crotchety and possibly oriental. It was an encounter that destroyed both their lives.
Pity poor Martin now... His career is in ruins, all forgotten. His estranged wives keep dying in the wrong order, and there's a nasty green stain by the wardrobe that could be an alien footprint or, possibly, just mould.
Martin's life is about to change unexpectedly… Impromptu poetry readings. Elephant expeditions. An obligatory bug-eyed monster. And a last, desperate chance for love, before it's too late.
Sounds like it's time for the Doctor to come into Martin's life again. And sort him out. Permanently.

Remarkable story, very different for not only BF but the Unbound range. Derek Jacobi is fantastic as a man who elicits many emotions in the listener, a bitter man who has failed in both his professional & personal life. One that everyone should listen to.

Different and very good! Derek Jacobi is excellent in pretty much everything he's ever been in, and this is no exception.

Possibly one of the most unique and effective ways of a story exploring its central theme ever.

It didn't last very long, but there were a few custom trailers that year. Derek Jacobi recorded the text in the first post as a monologue. I think Geoffrey Beevers had done one for Master as well. I was disappointed to not have them included as prologues on the CDs.
Anyway, Deadline. Oh sweet, magnificent Deadline.
As someone that was left dizzy and disappointed by Zagreus at the time, I was nearly moved to tears listening to this quiet gorgeous moving play. It felt theatrical and intimate and truly lived up to the "Unbound" moniker.
It also had the immortal line, "Doctor Who, you utter bastard!" LOL
But it also had this lovely lyrical moment:
"You are the teller of stories, the weaver of spells. You are Doctor Who, the savior of countless worlds, the eccentric old man in a police box. You are Doctor Who, my Grandfather, and I love you."
A beautiful and wonderful love letter to Doctor Who, and for me, the definitive celebratory piece for its 40th anniversary.

Deadline is one of Rob Shearman's best audio scripts, alongside Jubilee (later adapted into the acclaimed TV episode Dalek) and The Chimes of Midnight. What I love about this Unbound adventure is that it's told from a pseudo-production perspective, rather than focusing on an alternate in-Whoniverse incarnation. An excellent way to celebrate the show's 40th anniversary, featuring the amazing Derek Jacobi!
