Could it be made possible for athletes i.e. a footballer, a tennis player or a Formula One driver being allowed to attend the same conventions as movie/tv/sci-fi stars, comic book artists, etc. It would be very interesting to have an athlete such as Harry Kane or Damon Hill in the same vicinity as a movie/tv star such as Peter Davison or Patrick Stewart. If this was done, the London Film and Comic Con would have to be renamed to the London Film, Sport and Comic Con.

I'm kinda curious: what inspired this topic? Was there an announcement or rumour somewhere?

You do get sports stars at some cons. Not ones labelled as "cult" but autograph events, photo ops etc. I remember seeing Henry Cooper talking to Paul Darrow in the late 90s at one.

FanExpo Toronto tried this for a few years. It was quite poorly received, and ultimately discontinued.
I have no strong opinion on it, personally -- if I'm not interested in a thing I just don't go to it. Just saying, that's what happened when it was tried here.

Who were the guests, both athletes and non-athletes? FanExpo is an annual geek convention that's the sort of thing that folks like us go to. Sci fi actors, voice actors, comic writers/artists, panels with TV show writers and actors, artist's alley, all that sort of stuff. That's what it's always been. A while back, for a few years, the organizers tried to expand it to include an area with athletes. That area was quite sparsely attended for as long as they did it, and from my understanding the feedback from FanExpo attendees was overwhelmingly negative, so the idea was dropped and the con has since returned to its regular (and extremely popular and successful) geek-centric model. No shade on any of the people who did go and appreciate the change, but there just weren't enough attendees to the athlete area to justify it, while the people who are the convention's financial bread and butter (read: us geeky types) were vocally unhappy about it.

I can understand why there was a problem.
That is, I have experienced first hand that people who run around with football shirts, scarves and whistles made fun of me wearing my geek shirts/ costumes. Even sport fans of opposing teams gang up on geek types in a temporary truce against the "weird people".
On the other hand, nerdy people are naturally apprehensive of sport's types.
On both sides, there are a ton of prejudices against the other group of people.
Which, on a cerebral level makes ZERO sense. Both look and behave equally ridiculous (for example, I also wear a whistle most of the times and use it to signal overwhelming appreciation of my heroes when there is applause).
I do indeed appreciate athletes and the ones I have met so far were awesome to talk to (which is easier in NZ since it is so small and it is easy to run into an Olympic athlete at a sports event; I am an archer).
I personally do not have an issue with sport fans and I acknowledge that we are both crazy in our own ways.
However, in general, the trenches between the two groups might be too deep to be easily overcome....

I have attached a document I made that gives an idea as to what a convention of this sort might be like.

I have attached a document I made that gives an idea as to what a convention of this sort might be like. From memory the forum as a whole doesn't have a lot of storage space (we had problems some years ago, which may have gone away). Your document has hardly any content, just a bunch of pics to make it look like a flyer. Sadly it's even bigger as a PDF or even a graphic (not too easy to do)? I've had a look and the forum has used 168 MB of the tiny 200 MB we have for free. Can I ask you remove your document please and just key the list? I did think the FAQ covered this, but I seem to be wrong. I'll go away and talk to the MODS about tweaking the FAQ and reclaiming some space! Who'd have thought we'd have so little disc allocation in the 21st century!

I know it is not sports stars, but German FedCon had some ESA astronauts a couple of years ago. I think this is VERY cool, to bring some real science into the science fiction. I am looking forward to next year, hoping they again invite some similar people. I am less into sports, but I am all for SCIENCE!

The only famous Aussie Astronaut is from my hometown Adelaide. He has like a PHD in Engineering etc.. An older friend of mine who has his Masters of Engineering met him at a conference, said he was so knowledgeable and just a great guy to converse with.
Science heroes, trying to make the world better. YES!
