Spinning this off into its own thread as this isn’t strictly Series 13 news (I think? God knows what the trilogy is classed as) and its pretty god damn big news- A trilogy of Doctor Who Specials in 2022 will be the final adventures of the Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor and the last stories under showrunner Chris Chibnall. www.doctorwho.tv/news/?article=jodie-whittaker-chris-chibnall-leave-doctor-whoWe have no official word of successors for either. So, I guess we’ll have to speculate...

Sharing my post from the 'Series 13' thread here ...
The quote: "“I wish our successors – whoever the BBC and BBC Studios choose – as much fun as we’ve had. They’re in for a treat!” - fills me with optimism that the show at least has a future. If CC and Jodie aren't leaving until 2022, that gives a fair amount of time for any future production unit to at least set up whatever comes next. Get Chris Bidmead back (only joking - or am I?)!!
This double exit keeps things fresh, which is essential for a show that's all about change. If there's one thing from CC's era that should be taken forward, it is his view that 'Doctor Who is not a focus group.' I love that quote.
A new team coming onboard for the 60th anniversary (if that's what is going to happen) is a good thing, I think, although I don't envy them! A new Doctor will give the celebration an extra 'oomph', and vice versa. So, it's all good.
As for the new showrunner? Not a clue. New Doctor? Even less idea. Hope that helps - I look forward to being surprised.

My main observation is no comment on the show's 60th. I hold my position it will go to Netflix...

So, repost but an expansion too: it seems like McTighe is the most obvious choice as next showrunner. Since he came back from Australia, it seems like he's been making hard roads back into the industry here: -taking over Discovery of Witches, a high end fantasy adventure series. -BBC1's The Pact this year. -Got another drama coming soon called The Rising, which has some S12 writers on it too. He's been producing a lot of material recently, which would make him a viable candidate/name beyond just having Wentworth as his major thing. I imagine the Beeb would want, or perhaps prefer, someone who is a name or worked on something big and recent. Plus, a lot of female leads in all three of these projects.
Unless it's a total dark horse, someone nobody sees coming or even a new face on S13 that completely blew Chris away and has the best debut episode since Moffat (maybe since Matheison?), I can't see a lot of other immediate choices on the current staff: -Alderton probably still too junior, ditto James. -Patel's doing his own sci-fi show. - Hime's never been the head of a series and seems to be doing more staff work than originals. - Wilkinson seems to be pivoting more to directing. - Metivier's done A List before, but I don't know if that'd be enough to swing it.
Maybe it could be someone from an older series or era, like a Whithouse or Dollard (who wouldn't be a bad choice, of course), but I'm not betting the farm on it. I also wouldn't put stock in there being no sucessor announcement - that news could likely overshadow S13 so it's held back for another time.

Meanwhile, when's Jodie coming to Big Finish...

I think McTighe is a clear choice currently for a replacement for Chibnall. Ideally they’re going to want a series out in circa November 2023 (or at least a special with a series launching January 2024) with a new Doctor.
My takeaway is the BBC still have a lot of faith in the show and are very proud to have Jodie’s final episode as a celebration of their centenary. I think that’s a good indication for 2023 and beyond.

Interesting, not surprised about Jodie but I am about Chibnall as it seemed he was setting things up for after Jodie leaves. There will be plenty of "true fans" on social media orgasming over this but I suppose for me its better he doesn't outstay his welcome like Moffat did. It does make me wonder what comes next, would a new show runner want to bring back Jo Martin for example who I would love as the next doctor? I think there may be a desire to return to something more traditional, in other words a male Doctor which to be honest would see my interest wane. This era of Who has been fantastic for me after finding the show quite boring during the 12th doctor's era.
The first name that springs to mind & has already been mentioned as a possible new showrunner is Pete McTighe. He has a good & varied tv writing career, he also has a strong focus on female characters so in an ideal world he'd take over & retain a female doctor, possibly Laura Fraser from his show The Pact. I would imagine if this is being announced now then a new showrunner may have already been chosen, they will need to get things in place soon so as not to miss the 60th anniversary which I think will be really exciting given we will potentially have a new Doctor debuting in that role - wouldn't it be great to have a 60th with 3 different characters all thinking they are the Doctor & both them & the audience not finding out who is the real Doctor until the end.
I cannot see it going to Netflix as the BBC would want to hold on to it & also there is the history of Netflix cancelling shows. I could see potential in a co-production possibly similar to His Dark Materials which had involvement from both HBO & Bad Wolf Productions (Julie Gardner and Jane Tranter's production company who in particular have of course history with Doctor Who).
Doctor Who is about change & as has happened in the past I feel both a sense of sadness that what for me has been a beloved era is coming to an end but also cautious excitement about what will come next.

Meanwhile, when's Jodie coming to Big Finish... Jodie herself seems unlikely...but assuming Big Finish get licence for her era immediately as they did Capaldi, surely Sacha Dhawan reprising his Master is a shoe-in given his previous audio work.

Not really sure what you mean about Moffat overstaying his welcome. His last three episodes were all brilliant imo, as were Series 9 and 10. And I think it's highly unlikely the BBC won't keep the show. www.radiotimes.com/tv/sci-fi/doctor-who-next-doctor-showrunner-newsupdate/

Exactly, whatever people thing about the show & BBC there is no doubt that Auntie Beeb is committed to Doctor Who & sees it as a flagship show & global brand.

They must've already signed replacements that statement reads like its fait complete. Regards mark687 I wouldn't be surprised if Series 14 was already being worked on - Series 13 and two of the specials for next year have already completed filming, with the finale special for next year probably being wrapped it pretty soon, if they haven't already, so I don't see why they'd delay getting plans for the 60th ready.

Also, Jodie's departure is headlining on BBC News - and the BBC are not always in the business of blowing their own trumpet - so I'd say the old show's still pretty important to them.

As for a Doctor, I'm holding on another lady. Like I've said before, I just think the optics (never mind NMDs, just the regular tabloids) make putting a guy back in right now just asking for headaches. I don't know if I have a pick, but there's been no shortage of names floated, like T'Nia Miller, Vicky McClure, Kelly MacDonald, Michaela Coel and some more.
