A brilliant end to this boxset, a story that gives Eccleston plenty of dialogue & emotional beats - seriousness, comic lines etc. Some great imagery with the location & The Doc long hair & bearded basically turned into a living statue (a bit like the Melkur). There's a slight hint of Douglas Adams to the some of the plot elements here with the critique of big business & some comic lines. Its a shame Fred didn't decide to travel with the doctor.
But does he call Fred Frank towards the end?

Anyone else think "Fred" was a nice nod to Romana? Yeah, this was a belter of a story. Fred was one of the best AI or robotic companions BF have done as one offs (and there have been loads) and I think that's - oddly given it's a machine - down to her character development. It's a lovely layered story this with Eccleston Vs The 1% Elder Gods (!) while Fred tends to The Doctor and "changes" over decades and decades. How he used binary to explain things - one character a year - was a fantastic and fun resolution that I didn't see coming. It's the only one of the set I think they'd have struggled in 2005 to make look good but that's where audio comes in. Sweeping vistas, Sontarans all but eaten by the ground, a noble rabbit (clearly a relative of the one in Day Of The Doctor ) and Pyramids of gold...lovely imagery. When Fred got her Pinocchio moment I was sad she didn't take The Doctor up on his offer but if that frees us up for 3 more standalones this good? Bye Fred!

The Doctor's first line in this made me laugh out loud. Really, the lighter touch afforded to this incarnation has worked better than I could possibly have imagined.
There's not really much I can add to what others have already said. This final story - terrific title, by the way - is a fittingly thoughtful, enjoyable end to a hugely successful box-set. Fred, who has great appeal similar to the emotionally erratic androids that frequent The Robots, is the latest in a line of standalone companions you really want to hop aboard the TARDIS for more adventures. Apologies again for repetition, but Chris seems 100% invested in the role of the Doctor. A professional actor of course, I do hope that some of the exuberance he brings to the role is due in part to the fact that he's enjoying himself - because if he is, there's a chance he'll do more of these. Here, we're even getting him playing the Doctor against himself playing the Doctor - now that's what I call value!
The Ninth Doctor against corporate theft and exploitation - a story longing to be written. Very happy it's been done so well.

This one was my least favourite of the set. Not a criticism, but there was a lot to it that and I may have missed some bits and felt the music was very overwhelming in places. Definitely one where a relisten will be rewarding.
I loved Fred and the rapport she had with the Doctor. Sometimes time jumps in a story is a bit of a cheap get out to make you try and feel a greater connection with the character, but it’s effectively done here. It helps we know and love the Doctor, so to hear how he’s changing and Fred’s response to that does have an impact. And there’s some cracking material for Eccleston here, showing off his wide range and a contrast to the previous two stories, which would’ve neatly slotted into his TV run.

On the hand you've got the same tropes again (AI becomes self aware Corporate Mentality being around since the Dawn of Time) other hand, its one of the best performed takes on becoming self-aware and Ecclestone does a great casual weariness approach rather then the usual moral outrage to Corporate Mentality)

Why wasn't this the first set?! This story was an all time great. I literally whooped and fist pumped when Fred got life. Fred was the best companion 9s ever had! The set was good, pretty standard and that was enough to blow Ravagers away, but this finish takes the cake. The chemistry between the leads was magic. Who knew 9 needed a Tin person with a heart?

I'm pretty sure this was my favorite of the set. Fred beats out Hargreaves as favorite BF artificial lifeform companion (because nothing beats K-9), and that's a tough act to follow.

An interesting one, and once again the Doctor has a capacity to not go stark staring mad while just standing around for years on end. That was a lot of eye movement he must have done in that one sunset.

The thing I really enjoyed most about Planet of the End is the indirect references to Gallifreyan mythology, despite the Time War already having an impact on the Doctor himself. And isn't it funny, in a way, that he gets to grow longer hair and a beard?

Sorry if this is a silly question, but how is the extra hair funny? I don't get it. Is this the local elephant? The most likely answer to your first question is, "Briggs' ego," right? Or are we not supposed to talk about that? The more I reconsider this set, the more I think I liked it--and that's all down to Fred. She's a really fun, engaging character. Definitely the highlight of the whole 9DA range so far--though I have to say (again) that I find her ultimate fate far too (unintentionally) cruel.
