I like the movie but I don’t think it’s a great movie. It didn’t exactly capture the Jokers character correctly and I couldn’t see it as a DC movie upon looking back on it.

Didn't see it because I'm sick to death of anything to do with either Joker or Harley Quinn. Seriously DC, these characters are tired -- moratorium on both of them across all forms of media for no less than ten years. I like the movie but I don’t think it’s a great movie. It didn’t exactly capture the Jokers character correctly and I couldn’t see it as a DC movie upon looking back on it. Gonna quibble a bit here though. By virtue of Joker being a company owned IP who has been used by countless writers for over eighty years, I don't think there's any such thing as a 'correct' version of the character. Just different interpretations depending on who's doing the writing.

So true, the character has been around for decades & has changed over time with different interpretations sometimes imposed on the character such as when the comic code was introduced. As for the film, a forgettable rip-off of Scorsese films.

It's too derivative of King Of Comedy and Taxi Driver to betruly great but it is still a very good film, almost entirely because of Joaquin Phoenix. One of out best, more unpredictable actors. He took playing Joker as seriously as he did his work with P.T. Anderson or more recently in Lynne Ramsay's stunning You Were Never Really Here. He wasn't just slumming it for a big payday as Joker which I have to be honest, I see a lot of stars doing. Especially when they know it's a gig they can keep going for years.

Not by me! There's a Joker for everyone ... but Joaquin Phoenix isn't mine!
(Cesar Romero, before anyone asks.)

Now just imagine if the Joker film was set in the Batman 66 universe and followed the origin of that version...

I liked it. Wasn’t the best thing since sliced bread or anything but Phoenix was mesmerising in the role. Definitely didn’t strike me as a comic book movie though although admittedly I would have been curious to see how they could have tackled other characters in this more grounded universe. The Riddler or the Scarecrow might have worked just as well.
Personally, I just found the furore surrounding it rather amusing if anything.

People need to watch You Were Never Really Here, a powerhouse performance by Phoenix expertly directed by Lynne Ramsay & everything Joker wishes it could be.

Like most things involving the Joker - yes, it was overrated. The character himself is overrated. And overused. It’s all Caesar’s fault frankly. With Mark Hammil making it worse. He was a random villain with a clown fetish and now he’s capable of beating a comsic level threat that neither Batman or the entire Justice League could beat.

Oh, don’t remind me of The Batman Who Laughs... 🙄 The comment somewhat reminded me of Emperor Joker. (Haven't read TBWL.) If/when Hamill comes back again (again… again… again...), I’ll fanboy all over that. But if you want to talk derivative Jokers, How about Troy Baker? His Joker is pretty much just a Hamill impression, even when he isn’t replacing Hamill (as he did in Arkham Origins/ Assault On Arkham). It's really blatant in The Long Halloween. Oh, right this thread is about Phoenix's Joker. Totally over-rated. Nicest thing I can say about Joker is it at least did a better job of applying an arthouse/auteur aesthetic to a comic book premise than Hulk did. But real low bar there.

I enjoy a lot of comic book movies and don't mind darker stories at all. This had zero appeal for me because it just looked relentlessly bleak and almost celebratory of a type of "oppressed white male" rage that I was seeing too much of in the real world. Note: I'm not saying that it was intended as such, but that's how it resonated with me personally and why it ultimately failed to earn my interest.

Nope its a pretty awesome movie and refreshing in an era to have a comic book movie not follow the Generic MCU Formula

I enjoyed it, and thought it added some good extra layers to this strange character. My only gripe exists as a spoiler.
{Spoiler} Despite the fact that he is fired because he was found with a gun at a children's party in which he was dressed as a clown, Arthur is invited to appear on Robert De Niro's TV show in a live broadcast, despite having been ridiculed in an earlier edition, with no pre-show security check or other means to show identification. I know Gotham is, by its nature, a comic-strip world, despite director Todd Philips’ laudable attempts to give this a run down, urban reality, but when Fleck begins ranting and acting erratically, it is no great surprise when he begins shooting people. I mean, what did they expect?
Very lapse!
