As I am a part of both, I decided to compare them. They are both toxic to an extent. The DW fanbase has lots of flame wars over things like which era is best especially since the Thirteenth Doctor. The F1 fanbase also has its fair share of pathetic arguments the most recent of course being over the Hamilton Verstappen crash at Silverstone. Please be civil in this discussion. P.s. if someone thinks there is a better section for this thread then I will move it.

There are quite a few other fandoms out there with the same problems.... I certainly know from my counter trolling offensives on my German fan forum and being a Star Trek fan.... At a guess, any fandom, no difference between sports and entertainment, harbours toxic people. It has become worse lately. MUCH worse. In my German fandom, once upon a time until 10 years ago, the authors were hanging out with us on the forum and we had long and intense night time discussions. I befriended one of the authors and got a ton of signed books and even a signed hand-drawn poster of the heroes. It was absolutely fantastic and a fan's dream. Fast forward to 2021, a few weeks ago, the latest audio came out, and features a gay couple. This is a series who had a trans character 20 years ago and it was no issue. But now Pandora's box was opened with this and no moderators in sight to put the lid back on. The author came onto the forum to defend himself, and was insulted very very badly. I felt so ashamed for these trolls. Last week, I had time on my hands and entertained myself with a counter trolling offensive and pulled the legs of these trolls by posing on the forum as "a woke socialist SJW fascist" (obviously with split personality). I was glorious. Especially, since I was told how bad gay parents are for child care, and then one of the guys completely unrelated started on telling me how casting a woman as the Doctor destroyed Doctor Who. On a completely unrelated German forum. Now, THAT set me off. It was like Christmas for me. My put down was glorious. The guy later admitted that he had never seen Doctor Who in his life and just heard about it and the evil woman on the interwebs. Point made. I rest my case. But yeah, I am shocked how much fandom in general has devolved into a mud-flinging contest among primitive cave trolls recently. In the year 2021!!! I would not have foreseen this 10 years ago if I am honest.

Yeah, I would not have a clue about Formula One, or cars in general. Or motorcycles. Or sports in general.
But I am a member of several fandoms, and they have become equally disgusting and toxic of late.
So at a guess, if Formula One fans are not completely different from the usual other fan out there and only accept saints into their circle, I won't think they are any better.

Hello again Interesting question Williamsfan92, but I'm afraid Tuigirl's right things have got much worse online in the past ten years. My sporting fandom experience comes from the football Have your say comments sections on the BBC football site. Here too, there is much agressive posturing and negative comments. I rarely post, but here the problem is two-fold, firstly you have the team rivalries, unfortunately the tendency for rival fans to fight physically in the bad old days of the 70's and 80's has transferred online. There are some fans who jst enjoy the game and indulge in a bit of light-hearted teasing but for others its just an excuse to spit bile. The only Who forum I go on is this one, I hope those who have left recently return but I'm afraid they might not which will be our loss. This should be a haven for reasonable, tolerant discussion. Youtube is my main place where I have encountered the toxicity of fandom. Saying you don't like something is fine, giving a reason for it is fine but some of unpleasant negative confrontation between rival groups is so sad. Doctor Who is the most analysed television programme probably ever, constructive reviews are fine. Nobody likes everything, but I just find a lot of the hate-filled commentaries very upsetting.
EDIT Cave troll made me chuckle Tuigirl, where can we get the internet equivalent of a very big goat to keep them in order!

Doctor Who. The majority of fans are & have always been rude entitled arseholes who hate any version of the show that doesn't fit their particular needs

I think it's an interesting question, but I agree with other commenters here: the choice is too specific a combo for most on here to determine. plus, a sports fandom is always going to be a rocky place because it's competitive by it's very nature. Same for other types of racing or football or basketball etc.

Now, if we're going into the broader question of 'why have fandoms become more unpleasant/toxic places in the last decade', there's a series on Youtube by Innuedo Studios called The Alt Right Playbook, which talks about how 'normal people' can become radicalized in an online space and how that relates to the state of modern politics and fandoms (there's a couple devoted to 'the event' in gaming which had a big influence on what has happened since in other places, like the NMDs).

Write-in option: Star Wars fans.
I love many, many things Star Wars. Unfortunately it seems like 90% of the online fanbase are absolutely dreadful, just the dregs of humanity. My interaction with Star Wars fans is judged on a person-to-person basis; I just cannot engage with its fandom at large.

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

Music fans are the absolute worst, verbally. Genre fans make the online world very trying. Sports fans are the most reactive, physically.

Star Wars/Star Trek/Doctor Who. some of the most "passionate" fans.. No one has mentioned "Bronies"? I had to google that too. And found out on Wikipedia that the German Pirate Party is using episodes to calm down heated political discussions and they call this "Pony time". You learn something new every day.

Any fandom has its minority clique of rabid extremists. All the way from the ' My Supreme Deity is the Best and I Know What It's Thinking' afficionadoes to the 'Only Wear Brown Shoes with Brown Suits' brigade...

Yes they are not toxic like a lot of doctor who fans on social media & forums. Nasty people with their petty bias & vendettas. I think a lot of them want the show to be cancelled.

yup!.. They are the template for "bottom of the barrel".. nah, you’re thinking of furries. But that isn't the same as 'whats a worse fanbase', furries are just strange.
