Hey all. This is a message from the DU admin team,
We're seeing a lot of encouragement recently to reach out to the moderators when you think there are problems on the forum, and this is obviously something we also fully encourage and support. That's what we're here for! Unfortunately, while a number of people are saying this should be done, the fact is that we don't receive nearly as many reports as there are people encouraging this. Moderating is a job we all volunteered for and are prepared to put in the time to do, so reporting posts you feel need reporting is not wasting our time. Quite the reverse, in fact -- it helps us to do our job; we can't read through every single post in every single thread looking for insinuations. If there's a problem, we need you to use the report function (or PM us if you really can't stand the report function).
And to be completely clear: all reports/PMs are confidential. No one will ever know that you've reported them except the moderation team.
At the same time: please exercise good judgement. We're all adults here, and we can conduct ourselves accordingly. If someone is consistently posting 'bait' or comments that seem destined to derail the conversation, you are under no obligation to respond to them. This works in the other direction as well -- posts created solely to 'dunk on' another user are not productive, and not welcome. If another forumgoer consistently irritates you, you are free to simply block them and enjoy the forum without ever interacting with them again. Not every comment that disagrees with you, or teases you, or simply rubs you the wrong way, rises to the level of a forum rule violation. Each and every member of this forum is only human, so it's perfectly normal that not all of us will get along. But that doesn't mean it's okay to poke the proverbial bear. Be grown-ups. Exercise good judgement. And in a pinch, have a look at the Forum Rules that everyone here agrees to abide by.
We would hope that we have earned your trust over the years, and we hope you will continue to trust us when we say that all reports are taken seriously. Even though you might not personally see the results of any reports you make, that does not mean that no action has been taken. We don't share with reported forum members who has reported them, and we don't share with the reporter what action we may or may not have taken as a result of their report. The reporting system is private, specifically so that nobody ever need fear retaliatory comments/behavior from other users.
We want to help as best we can, but we're far better able to do that with your help, so please feel free to reach out at any time.
Thanks for reading,
The DU team
