Was it Germany where the translator inserted adverts into the plot? In just eleven words you have inspired me a scathing fury beyond all reason. What kind of monster would do such a thing? Jesus. It's be more respectful to douse the book in gasoline and set it on fire. Back in the day, these adverts were quite common. They were placed in pretty much all pop culture "low literature" paperback books. For example, they were also in my old Star Trek books. At least they came with a bonus: most of the time, they came with a drawing of the TNG crew or something similar.
However, this was done 30 years ago and is not common practice anymore.
I was a teenager back then, and the cup a soups they were advertising were not something we had in our house, nor would my parents buy these.
I just accepted the advertising and moved on reading.
I do not think I was annoyed. I see possibilities here. "Nothing can stop the catharsis of spurious morality - except the great taste of Charleston Chew!" Or a zombie movie - the creatures will no longer drone BRAINS BRAINS BRAINS but BRAINS' BRAINS' BRAINS' (but can they use a tin opener?). Or Spock could shill for Long Life Milk (and prosper)

You might laugh, but it was EXACTLY like that. They picked a convenient line, like a paragraph describing what Data had for lunch at the Academy (the novel "Survivors") and this they used to add a Cup a soup ad. Starting with "Data may not need frequent food, but he would still enjoy....."

Back in the day, this was before streaming and before we had a VHS recorder, we were actually VERY happy that a German publisher made Star Trek books available. VHS cassettes were VERY expensive back in the day. You paid the same price you pay for Blue Ray now, and only had two episodes on there in average quality. So the books were what we had.
Do not look a gift horse in the mouth. Do not mind the Maggi ads in your pop culture books.
