i always thought jelly babies were just another name for jelly beans. but i saw someone online describing them and it didnt sound the same.
so what did i think
at first i thought they were kind of like gummie bears but they tasted more like swedish fish
i ate the whole bag i can see them become addictive

Yeah, they're not really like jelly beans or gummie bears.

Yeah, they're not really like jelly beans or gummie bears. Definitely not jelly beans, though maybe a denser, chewier gummie bear is not a bad descriptor for jelly babies.

Always interesting to see an outsiders perspective on such items which are considered commonplace in my (and I suspect our) neck of the woods.

I am not a fan. I tried then when I was down in NZ, and I neither like the consistency nor the taste. German gummy bears on the other hand...

Maybe it's just nostalia, but I didn't find the modern ones to be as nice as the classics of my childhood. And I certainly wouldn't bother with a supermarket own brand. Bassetts all the way!

I heard a (possibly apocryphal) story about jelly babies
"Jelly Babies were originally known as Peace Babies coming out after the end of WW1. The company stopped making them then after WW2 a Christian started to make them again this time calling them Jelly Babies. He designed in them a means of illustrating the gospel.
To get the story you have to lick off the floury stuff that they are sprinkled with. Once you do that you can see that the black jelly baby has a heart on it. This was used to illustrate sin and the darkness of the human heart. The green jelly baby is crying which the maker used to illustrate human misery. The red jelly baby has a big B on its chest which represents a blood sacrifice. The pink jelly baby is an actual baby which pointed to the need of being born again. The yellow jelly baby has a necklace around it which was to illustrate the riches and treasures of the Christian life whilst the orange baby is carrying a bag which illustrated the need of being prepared for the Christian walk."
Speaking personally I have never examined a jelly baby closely enough to know if this is true or not. According to wikipedia jelly babies had a uniform shape until 1989, which would suggest it is not true.
It is however an interesting story

I think I had a jelly baby (imitation) once, when a friend bought them for me.
Genuine jelly babies are not kosher, so, sadly, I can't eat them.
