I don't dislike this story, but I did find the plot confusing on first viewing. The Target novel helped a bit however.
It's currently one of my favourites, but that might change when I come to revisit it.
It's definitely better than what followed it.

We all like different things so nothing really is can be overrated but this is brilliant story.

Not at all. I think it’s well deserving of its legendary reputation. Only thing which lets it down I think is the look of the Magma Beast but even then it’s only a small part of an otherwise superb story.

NO!
The Caves of Androzani is one of the best Doctor Who stories ever! It fully deserves its reputation.

When I first saw it, I was also confused by the first episode. The story is very much a slow build-up of action and characters - many faces and voices are thrown at us, and we have to take the time to understand who they are. By the second episode, and the 'cliffhanger reveal', I began to get more intrigued by these manipulative people and it became clear The Doctor and Peri were in real danger. The characters began to gain momentum, in the way that only their slow build-up could have achieved. Halfway through, I was on board and thoroughly invested. When I watched it again, I enjoyed the opener a lot more knowing what was to come.
I think the second half is more entertaining than the first, but wouldn't be so if those initial episodes hadn't done the ground work.
It's a masterful story, wonderfully told. Morgus's asides to the camera, as if he's addressing the audience, is one of many great touches. The Doctor is an out and out hero, rather as he was in Warriors of the Deep earlier on, but this story does his heroism justice. Beautifully played, it's The Doctor sacrificing his life for his friend, amid a wash of deeply unpleasant and selfishly motivated others. In the end, it's just him, Peri and the TARDIS.
Usually if something is universally praised, I tend to be a bit more critical of it. Even with that taken into account, this is a fantastic tale and thoroughly deserves its reputation.

Well, in the last major DWM poll it was 4th out of 241. So...if you think there are more than 3 better, yes. If you think 2 or fewer are better...its underrated I think almost by default the titans of any polls, the perennial Top 10s become overrated and it just becomes accepted that they must be excellent because lists always say so. I call it the Led Zep effect. Personally I think it is towards the very top. Davison is wonderful, the script fantastic. Vilains are ALL memorable. The stakes massive. Its fantastic.

It's not my favourite but I wouldn't call it overrated - it's very well made and deserves the praise it gets.

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

I never got the love for it when it first aired or in the years immediately following it. However, I love it now because it is a fantastic story with a magnificent villain and a brilliant cast of characters. Also, has anyone else noted that Saward really tried hard to recapture what worked here with Revelation of the Daleks? It feels quite similar in a lot of ways with the same level of side-plotting going on.

One of my all time favourite story's, tense, terrifying, atmospheric & a fantastic swansong for the Fifth Doctor.
No way is this underrated, this is Doctor Who at it's best.

Don’t get me wrong, when I first saw The Caves of Androzani, I wanted to like it as much as most people do. But it’s because I found the plot confusing that I can’t.

It feels quite similar in a lot of ways with the same level of side-plotting going on. There was an article by Paul Cornell in the 80s/90s fanzine DWB that argued just that, but IIRC it went further and said the whole of season 22 was influenced by Caves. Article was entitled The Androzani Effect.

Thanks for that.

I recently saw The Caves of Androzani again, and it’s not terrible, but I don’t think it lives up to it’s reputation. My full thoughts will be revealed in my review of the story which I will soon post on here.

I stopped watching Doctor Who when Tom Baker departed. I remember watching the Five Doctors and enjoying that, but the rest of the Classic era of Doctor Who mostly passed me by.
Several years back I bought the first Revisitations box set. It contained three stories: the Talons of Weng Chiang (the main reason I was buying it); the Paul McGann TV movie, which I had seen at time of release and enjoyed; plus The Caves of Androzani, which was a story I hadn’t seen, but had heard great things about.
Sorry, but yes for me it was overrated. Unlike those other stories in the box set I have only watched it the once and really don’t have any desire to see it again.
However it is clearly loved by a lot of people and my opinion in only valid to me.
