2.2 The False Dimitry by Sarah Grochala.
These 9DAs continue to be the freshest Who range BF have. This is a sci-fi-infused historical set in Moscow (a lot has changed since this was written) and features some great characters and an interesting premise into which once again Chris Eccleston's Doctor slots wonderfully. This story and the style in which it is told is very much inkeeping with RTD - fast-moving, filled with good characters and fuelled with an emotional core. There's a lot going on, and it's good to know I enjoyed it enough to give it more than one listen, to help clear a few things up a bit in my mind. Sarah Grochala is another terrific new writer for BF, and her's is a name I'll make a note of for future purchases. A great set of tales so far.

My take on Back to Earth has just landed at CultBox - another great set of tales - loved Auld Lang Syne particularly, really difficult to review without spoiling anything!

1.3 Auld Lang Syne by Tim Foley.
It took me a while to get into this, but as things turned out, I think it's my favourite story in this very strong box set. Also, I think we have the most monstrous monster in all of Doctor Who - Wendy Craig as Great Aunt Bette is a formidable foe! For a moment, I could see her joining the Doctor aboard the TARDIS - can you imagine the fireworks? Like a cross between Evelyn Smythe, Marvin the Paranoid Android and a Drashig. Seriously though, what an amazing character - central to what's going on, and someone that others react to, someone who helps make them as effective as they are. Tremendous.
'My ears are burning, and when their this size, they pack a lot of heat' - Tim Foley's dialogue crackles throughout, and kudos for Chris Eccleston for sending himself up. Leah Brotherhead (Mandy Litherland) is this set's lass-with-a-northern-accent, but although such traits are over-used at this point (Jodie Whittaker - see what you've started? ), here the location of the story, indeed the character of the story, is more than a good enough reason for this here.
Really enjoyed this story, and I think this set is my favourite so far.

Hello.
Has anyone received their CD copy of 'Back to Earth'? I've received an e-mail notification to confirm 'Wink' is on its way, but I haven't received a notification about 'Back to Earth' yet. I e-mailed BF about it and they said that haven't dispatched the CDs of 'Blake's 7's 'Heroes and Villians'.
Tim 🙂

The False Dimitry - a tour-de-force history lesson, who-style. Top marks.

Playing catch up a bit here, but well what a treat the 9DAs continue to be. Top notch Who Stories without cross overs, the Brig excepted but I think we can offer a special pass for that one. Plus Chris is an absolute joy to listen to and from the behind the scenes it sounds like he’s continuing to really enjoy it too.
What marvellous times we live in to get not only more 9DAs, but also such top quality stories and actors, we really do.
Of the three, I’d say the third story was my favourite but I was very happy with all of them. Auld Lang Syne did tug at the heartstrings a bit towards the end though I have to say. Now where did I put those tissues?
Roll on the next box set!

Auld Lang Syne.
Whaaa! That was good! And as for Bette - a grand job by Wendy Craig. Yup, I've known women like that. I'm probably becoming one too. Be warned.

Much fun - the Ninth Doctor is probably my least favourite on TV (sacrilege I know!) but here free of all the RTD trappings and BF's cul de sacs he shines. The stories are all good fun with their own hearts and styles. Auld Lang Syne was probably my favourite, and Wendy Craig stole the show, again!

Another excellent set of stories brilliantly acted by the cast.
Eccleston is smashing it at BF the quality of the writing finally adds more layers to this incarnation.

Just imagine if he had signed up a few years ago back with the normal 4 stories per boxset.

I hope future releases feature 2 parters like Old Friends which is my current favourite release.

Finally got around to finishing The False Dimitry. Surprised to see so many people praising it - I found it a slog to get through and is easily one of my least favourite BF stories of recent memory.
Auld Lang Syne, on the other hand, was marvellous and I think is going to become a New Year tradition from now on.
The opening and closing stories were both “fantastic” as Nine would say, just a shame the set was let down by the middle story.

Right, during my travels today, I started on this set. For my train ride, I listened to Station to Station. Great spooky story, and I really have to emphasize the quality of the sound design! I really had a hard time telling the train sounds in real life from the one inthe drama apart.... for example, I was wondering why the door closing chime sounded when we had not been in any station. This was very well performed, too.
False Dimitry- listened during the plane ride. Sorry.... but this story did not do anything for me. This might be because I have no clue about Russian history. For me, this just came across as the usual alien secret invasion plot and I was also quite confused in parts. Not my cup of tea I am afraid. I also find the BF attempts to recreate crowded scenes with thousands of people pitiful and beyond my ability to suspend disbelief. BF drama works best for me in intimate settings, playing to the strength of a small cast, like the first story in this set.

I have to agree with everyone else that Auld Land Syne is simply beautiful. It has some interesting temporal structure, a neat idea behind it, plus a characterful family story with lots of heart. I did tear up at the end. Plus, I have been a scout in my youth, so I know the German text to the tune by heart, and it always reminds me of tearful goodbyes at the end of fun and exciting summer camps. It also works well as a Doctor- lite story. This is again the type of story that works well for me- setting, atmosphere and interesting working together and to best effect with a small cast. Best story of the set.
