Friendly Fire
Darkest/ Mature themed story in a while
The Edge of the War
Very reminiscent of a plot thread of a recent TV Adaptation of a unique Graphic Novel with real life Historic reasons for it blended in.
Both stories give Peter in particular chances for a strong performance and for Janet in Edge of War

Friendly Fire Darkest/ Mature themed story in a while Regards mark687 I'm on the fence about buying this one but usually really enjoy John Dorney's writing and when the doctor has darker/mature adventures, like Caves of Androzani. Based on Friendly Fire, would you recommend giving this set a try?

I can't remember, was Conflicts of Interest supposed to come with some kind of bonus extra, or was that just Purity Undreamed? For some reason I was thinking it was the both of them. Thanks, I'll download later today and share my thoughts I look forward to hearing your thoughts. 5th Doctor stories tend to be pretty hit or miss for me, so for now I'm technically on the fence about this one... but teetering and likely to fall on the side of picking it up any moment now....

I heard Friendly Fire last night and it’s very…different I guess is the best way to put it. It’s very small scale and really takes its time, which I quite liked as a contrast to most of the 1 hour stories we get nowadays. After all the slow tension though the ending did feel a tad easy. The soundtrack was also very good.

Its meant to be for both. The one for Conflicts is called Gobbledegook and can be listened to either before or after Friendly Fire Regards mark687

Friendly Fire- I LOVED this! This is the kind of story I crave. No universe in peril, no Daleks screaming, no giant space battles. Instead, this story is a ordinary crime thriller. Well, in the extras, the actors label it a "Western", and yes, that too, but at the heart of it, we have some pretty ordinary despicable criminals and their thugs doing some pretty ordinary murderous crime and the Doctor and their companions just happen to wander in and get "in the way". This is such a breath of fresh air. The setting and atmosphere is dark and desolate and the stakes become higher and more desperate. It is also a great show case for Tegan. Man, she was wasted on the TV series. In these audios, Janet Fielding is being given some real meat and she jumps at the opportunity. The performances in general are great, and "the Borg Queen" herself, Alice Krige, is about as mean and menacing as you could get. Great story.

The Edge of the War also uses its pace leisurely. It really feels like the two writers of this set enjoyed having more than a hour to explore their stories again. After all the intrigue and mystery I did get a little lost amidst the explanations, but the final scene was a really good twist. Poor Tegan.
All in all, for my first venture into post-MR Fifth Doctor I’m quite pleased. I would not say this pair of stories is among the best, but they are a refreshing duo amidst the continuity buffets and rapid storytelling that characterises a lot of Big Finish’s offerings these days.

Just finished Friendly Fire, I can report that this is a very good little story. It does have a leisurely pace but this allows a sense of dread and intrigue to build. The 5th Doctor is at his best when dealing with human evil. It's best going in to this story knowing little about the plot, which is simple and subtle but dealing with dark emotions and human failings. The music is great and evokes the era really well. The darker side of humanity on display here is reminiscent of Caves of Androzani, if on a smaller scale. 4/5

Gobbledegook was a charming addition. I liked its ties to Friendly Fire and it was just a very nicely told little story.

Finished Edge of the War. I liked it, but after I recently did a 5th Doctor re-listen, it reminded me a lot of these Stockbridge stories featuring the 5th Doctor. Really a lot. Yeah, it was a slightly different setting and the ending with Tegan was dramatic, but it just could not hide the obvious similarities. I have not listened to the audio book extra yet, but I can already say that this was a good set. No instant classic, but certainly not bad and above the usual average output. And the first story is the better one for me.

This is another set that shows that out of the Monthly Range Doctors (5, 6, 7), the Fifth Doctor is faring the best by far. We have been getting one quality story after another for Five, I just wish Six and Seven were doing as well.

Friendly Fire by John Dorney.
From the comments here, and those used in reviews - even the less complimentary ones - I suspected this story might be right up my street. And by heck, it is. Yes, the villains here are small-time compared to Daleks or Cybermen or whatever, but nonetheless nasty, and nasty on a more personal level. Alice Krige is excellent as Reno as are her minions, and Peter Davison, Sarah Sutton and Janet Fielding perform John Dorney's words of growing disgust at the situation beautifully. In some ways, this takes me back to TV's Warriors of the Deep - stay with me here - in that PD's performance was so good as a rather more emotionally wrought Doctor that it put the wobbly monsters and their untucked masks out of my mind for the duration. He shows that same gritty determination here. Those who ask 'was the Fifth Doctor a pushover?' might enjoy listening to this. He's gently sarcastic, softer than, say Colin or Sylvester, but don't mess with him. He's your big protective brother or cousin, and PD's performance is sometimes underrated. The speeches here, he delivers with (brave) heart and conviction. Excellent stuff. This is exactly the kind of story I love, and I'd take something like this over more universe-rattling threats every time; love it. And Howard Carter's Klaus Schulze style music is wonderful! Very glad I bought this.
Now, as elkawho suggests, let's have some similarly brilliant stuff for Old Sixie and Sevenzy!
