The Edge of the War by Jonathan Barnes.
I found this to be a thinner story than Friendly Fire, but again, one that fitted the three-part format well. It's a bit disheartening to find that both cliffhangers feature The Doctor asking "What exactly is going on?" - the revelations, when they come, have far-reaching connotations, but the Doctor continually being mistaken as to the truth doesn't do much for his deductive powers - although it underlines how complex the situation is. I liked this story. There's no black and white, no true villains, and that makes a change for Doctor Who. Again, the cast are excellent, with French sounding actors playing French roles. The regulars are on great form. One gets the feeling they could play these roles in their sleep, always turning in earnest, dramatic and funny performances. And the music, once again by Howard Carter, is excellent. Shame there's no music suite - perhaps it will be included as an extended extra?

Listened to the extra "Gobbledegook" yesterday. It was nice. It was very small scale, set in a library. We had similar stories before and all the elements are nothing new- the Doctor visiting an old friend, this type of alien "threat", the library setting... However, this story is quite nice and Dan Starkey simply is a phenomenal audio book reader. With music and sound effects, it nearly sounds like a full-cast audio. Starkey is fantastic with giving every character a distinctive voice.

Like others I appreciated the leisurely pace, but I didn’t actually enjoy the story all that much. I wasn’t sold on the guest characters and I didn’t feel any tension building up; they were just irritating in their evasiveness and whilst a lot was said, not a lot was done to support it. I thought our main stars were all phoning in their performances, especially in part one, and throughout I couldn’t picture anything more than the actors in the studio. Disappointing; it didn’t need three parts and it didn’t get its message across as well as it seems to think.

The Edge of War is a step up from Friendly Fire, I thought. Both leisurely paced, but I enjoyed the intrigue of Edge a lot more and felt our leads sold their dilemma much more, particularly the Doctor’s humanity and the revelation with Tegan. I hope the fallout of that is explored and not ignored, as that’s what really made the Marc arc stand out.

As someone who has always liked stories with smaller and more personal stakes and sometimes finds the constant “all of reality is in danger” a little overwhelming, it’s like this was custom made for me. The really great character writing (some genuinely wonderful and true to life dialog elevated an already strong script) and performances made this a favorite. Listened twice and look forward to a third time!
