Agreed in my opinion it didn't to be done though again just my opinion. Regards mark687 Would you please explain what you meant by that ? Please reply. This and the pervious Boxset are set in the same alternate reality that doesn't know it is one, then you get the last 15 minutes that posits alternate realities and how do you judge which of them is a worthwhile version, none of whats come before in the 2 boxsets indicates that this the direction its going and for me personally I don't like a What If scenario to know its a What If scenario and then posit others. Regards mark687

I'm wondering if the BBC sent back notes on the pitch that forced a re-think that resulted in the takeaway from the Ending. Regards mark687 I'm two episodes into Destiny and I'm enjoying the stories very much but I do feel like something's being held back, I don't feel like I've fully got to know the Warrior, with both sets there have been moments that feel like we're actively being steered away from the Warrior, Ep 1.1 Dust Devil had the Sixth Doctor with the Warrior only appearing at the end, Ep 1.2 the Warrior has amnesia, Ep1.3 the Warrior is a medium part of a large cast also featuring a different version of the 6th Doctor, Ep 2.1 the Master is the focus and the Warrior barely appears, Ep2.2 High concept plot with the Master again featuring heavily and only at the end do we see this darker Warrior showing his character. Don't get me wrong, I have enjoyed the stories, there's much to admire in the acting and overall production but I do feel like what I was hoping for from these sets hasn't materialised. My expectations may be at fault for any disappointment, I know this has been the case with other franchises, for example I don't care for the Disney Star Wars movies, I had an idea of where the classic characters should be 30 years later and I can't expect film makers to cater to an audience of one. I have the highest respect for the work of Big Finish, I'd be very interested to know the constraints the BBC impose on a production, how much of the original plan gets altered from conception to product release. One of the biggest frustrations with Doctor of War has been the Frustrating Characterization and the fact that Colin Baker's War Doctor is barely given a clear character arc and a natural progression. Squeezing a character journey in Two Box-sets of 6 Stories is possible however if the main character is sidelined (as you mentioned above) it makes it impossible to have a satisfying story arc and Fan expectations are not the fault and regarding the Disney Star Wars films are badly written excrement that butchered the characters of The Original Trilogy Characters but that's a topic for another discussion

I take your point on general fan expectation, I know that my own personal expectations and tastes have made me judge releases perhaps more harshly than they deserve, not just with Doctor Who but many franchises. I find I'm best reviewing releases a couple of days after I've listened/viewed, that way I'm more objective. I always try to find some good as I know there are many elements to productions, for example acting, soundtracks, writing, direction and planning behind the scenes. It must be difficult seeing something you've worked hard on getting a negative reception, especially when some online elements make things more personal. As far as taste and expectations goes, anything set in my least favourite Doctor Who seasons is going to have to work harder to win me over, stories set within my favourite seasons raise my expectations, I love the gothic early Tom Baker seasons, Pyramids of Mars and Talons, just perfection! These Unbound sets are kinda midway on my expectation spectrum, the starting point being the legendary Genesis of the Daleks and of course a reimagined Time War. I love dialogue and character building in my stories, I've often day dreamed what if's, these sets were always going to be divisive. On reflection I've enjoyed these sets, they've been disorientating and not what I expected but I'm glad Big Finish tried something different and hope they continue with Unbound ideas.

I may not like it if the warrior turned his universe into the prime universe.
Is this not ment to be a separate parallel universe and not a alternate timeline?
I could like the idea of a alternate universe were the doctor tried to destroy the dalek's out there.
If it is a parllel universe then does it need a restart?
Does that go against the idea of different universes?

I enjoyed volume 2 more than volume 1 (which I also enjoyed despite it being very challenging to understand). All in all, I’m happy I preordered these 2 sets the day they were announced, only knowing that it was Sixie as the Doctor of War in Unbound adventures. I’ll probably give it a relisten after I’ve reduced my backlog a bit more, & hopefully I can understand the stories better.
Based on the reactions here, I was expecting to have great difficulty understanding the last story, but surprisingly, it made sense even though I cannot fully articulate how exactly.
Who Am I? - I found the retelling of Leela’s story interesting (I know the plot highlights of the tv episode despite not watching it yet. I have Collection 14 but only watched Mandragora & Talons).
Time Killers - the most unique plot among the 3 stories in this boxset imho.
The Key To Key To Time - The only thing I know about the Key to Time is the search for pieces to it (since they haven’t released the Collection boxset). I loved this episode. Loved the banter, loved the chemistry. The ending was whoa, what was that? But I loved this story. 👍🏻 I adore Colin.
Adding to my list of Fantasy releases the hope for volume 3 onwards. 🙂 probably as impossible as most of the items on that list. 😁

I'm wondering if the BBC sent back notes on the pitch that forced a re-think that resulted in the takeaway from the Ending. Regards mark687 You mean they intentionally and prematurely force Big Finish to end the continuation of The Doctor of War Series and Unbound Range itself despite that it was A- Okay to use established DW Actors like Colin Baker to play alternative versions of their Doctors?
i mean considering that RTD's Era pulled the plug on the Original run of Unbound Audios i sadly would not be surprised to see history repeating itself.
Why would the BBC force Big Finish not to do any more of the Doctor of war or the unbound range and HOW does this stop Big Finish from making any more of the unbound range?

Today I started on this. I am going in expecting another set of quite "meta" stories.
"Who Am I?"- I agree with other people saying this story was confusing. It is. Although in the end, I think I understood most of it. Performances are good and I also like the Master doing his thing. He is nicely evil and very creepy. I thought there were several really clever bits in there, recalling certain scenes of the actual TV episodes. The Master meeting Leela for example was great, especially the little twist on the "jellybaby" conversation. It is just the scenes with the confused mad computer, speaking in different voices, that were really distracting.
"Time Killers"- Pairing the Doctor with the Master as companion is great. Let us be honest- the Master really steals the limelight here. Great performance by Beevers. The story itself is sadly very similar to previous Time War stories featuring stolen Dalek weapons and using time as weapon.
Well, for a set that calls itself "Unbound Doctor of War", in the first two stories, the Doctor is hardly featured. Both stories feature the Master much more prominently. What a weird decision. Why did they not call this the Unbound Master of War? Not that I am complaining, I like Beevers, I like what he does with the Master here, but still, the title of this set was pretty misleading.

"The Key to key to time"- another very meta story. Some nice Doctor / Davros banter. You certainly cannot fault the performances by the leads here. But the story itself... sorry to say, but it was all over the place. Yes, maybe it was supposed to be like that... but I cannot help but wish there was a bit more of a red line though this instead of a lot of chaos. Colin hits the nail on the head in the interviews when he calls the story a "mind scramble".
So for my final verdict- We get some great performances. However, the experimental stories did not quite hit with me. I usually adore experiments, I also like weird and chaos with mixed timelines. But if you do that, you always need some strong thread to hold it all together. And that is sadly missing here. So sadly, it just falls apart.

I don't get it, y'all. I really don't get it. The series is well-acted, well-designed, populated with writers whose work I really like. But I just don't understand what this is trying to be. A "What-if-Time-War, but Colin"? A send-up of 70s Who? A meta hodgepodge? The series is called Doctor of War, but the titular Doctor of War is so often not in it. We don't get much of the war either. I like these sets, they're enjoyable (I found Time Killers especially fun, and those last few references at the end of the set gave me a chuckle), but I really feel confused after all of it.

Why did Russel T Davis pull the plug on Unbound ? Was he not only against having new actors play alternate Doctors?

Why did Russel T Davis pull the plug on Unbound ? Was he not only against having new actors play alternate Doctors? What I remember hearing was just vague speculation at "the BBC" being behind it, because the Unbound audios conflicted pretty heavily -- tonally and thematically -- from the more child-friendly, all-ages vibes of the RTD reboot. NuWho would eventually get more serious and dramatic, but that didn't really start until series 3 (and arguably didn't really get going until Moffat took over): those first couple years were pretty silly and campy. EG the Slitheen, the Absorbaloff, etc.
