Random question... if all you have is a load of digital files on a computer hard drive, or whatever, can it really be called a collection as such? Apart from a digital file what do you own and how do you show it off?
Would you like to come round and look at my folder full of MP3's doesn't sound as exciting as looking at a bookshelf full of books, a stack of Blu-Rays or thumbing through somebody's box of LPs (etc.) ...

A friend has set up a Plex server and digitized a ton of movies and shows' DVDs/BDs. Like his own personal Netflix.
And he is the only person I know with whom I ever 'thumb through' "collections" of any kind, I can't think of anyone I know with shelves and shelves of physical stuff to thumb through.

Can u really go to a convention and get Who actors to sign your HDD? LOLZ
I have had a few Who actors sign my BF cd covers- pride of place in my Batave.

The definition of a collection is “the action or process of collecting someone or something”. So collecting data is a collection and to be pedantic has been around before the invention of CDs, DVDs, etc.! It depends entirely on what you get out of it. If you collect solely to show off, then it continues to be a collection, but not a representative one. For me, it should be a curation of your interests, regardless of where that is displayed or shown. For example, I always struggle a bit with film fans who have nothing but Criterion or other boutique releases on their shelves, as I don’t see that as an insight into a person, except perhaps snobbery.

I should try, actually, Would be great to collect all signatures in one place!
Even if the drive breaks down, it is still a great and fun collectors item. Just imagine the amusing chats you will have with the actors.

In all seriousness, that’s not a massive step away to the convention / signing norm of someone carrying a big book and getting all the cast and crew to sign! The Doctor Who equivalent tends to be The Vault from the 50th or something like that. I know I tend to get the special edition of The Light of the End signed if I have an extra signature or meet an actor again. There’s so many cast photos in there from the original run of the show that it makes a nice thing to have.

Format Digital Download Price € 7.99 Date 27/05/2012 Status Payment Completed Total €7.99
My 1st BF purchase The Adventures of the Perfidious Mariner. Over 10 years i have averaged approximately 42 Downloads per year.not as good as most, maybe better than some.427 to date. But i still have a humongous backlog, which i have no chance of clearing any day soon! And i must admit i get less excited these days about new releases.

I mean, it's still a collection whether it's on display or not. And I'm not exactly going around saying, "Would you like to come 'round and look at my overpacked bookcases," either. And while not exactly fun, it is satisfying to be able to go about organizing all of your digital media. Or, at least, I think so. I've even got a handy text document to keep records of both all the items I already own as well as those I wish to pick up eventually.

Well, the DVD collection of everything that it was possible to get at the time (replacing VHS tapes! ) runs from Unearthly to the movie. Then I gave up because the new stuff seems to be permanently available on iPlayer anyway and I'm not that mithered about it. Sometimes I wonder if I should sell or give away, then I remind myself that come the great EMP and the wiping of all switched on computers, that'll be the only way to watch proper Who. So I'm hanging on to them. (until the Right Price is offered... ) As for the audios - I came slightly late and impoverished, so have only ever done downloads, which are archived offline safely in 2 different places just in case.

I've got almost everything with the doctor in as a physical release. However in more recent years I tend to buy the spin offs as download only. I've so many CDs now coupled with the BBC target readings, dvds, eaglemoss figures and b&m figures that I need a new house to get a bigger room for it! I've yet to convince the wife...
