Sometimes even the weaker stories can be salvaged by the energy and chemistry of their leads. Who do you think fit this bill the best? Sarah Jane? Ace? Jamie? Or maybe you have a wildcard you think is overlooked?

No need for a wildcard, Sarah-Jane Smith would win the award for me... she was as good as it gets. I grew up in love with her!

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

Got to be Sarah Jane for me, I love the dynamic when she's travelling with Harry and the Doctor, I really hope we get some new stories with Tom Baker via Big Finish.
Other companion highlights
Susan, Ian and Barbara - 1st Doctor
Jamie - 2nd Doctor
Jo - 3rd Doctor
Leela - 4th Doctor
Ace - 7th Doctor
I like most of the other companions, many greatly improved by Big Finish.

Kind of weird to just title a thread “Barbara Wright” with no other content, but agreed.

Leela is the best companion from Classic Who, but I'd say Jamie is the best companion in Classic Who. Though SJS and Romana are also both up there.

Jo. Jo has always been my favorite, from the first moment I saw her. Jamie comes second.

Romana 2 is my favourite companion, and perfect to curtail the extravagance of the Fourth Doctor. No-one tells him off quite like Romana. AND in one story, she said "The backlash back blast will bounce back and kill us all!" Not everyone could get away with a line like that. Lalla Ward can do no wrong. I heard a rumour she isn't very well - I really hope that isn't true.

Yeah, the Romana II / 4th Doctor banter is probably the best Doctor-Companion dynamic we've had in the TV show, at least up until Donna. Seems really weird how so few of the subequent Classic companions had much in the way of chemistry with their Doctors. Ya' gotta have some friction to keep things interesting. Jo. Jo has always been my favorite, from the first moment I saw her. Jamie comes second. I'm sorry, but I laughed a bit at this. I'm almost certainly misremembering, but when I think back to Jo's first scene, I think of her sitting down on the floor and flashing her panties at the camera. Not sure if that was the "first moment" with her or not, but it's what I remember most (pretty sure it was at least her first episode, but with my stupid brain, who knows).

Since I am a heterosexual female, I usually tend to ignore all the "for the dads" bits. I think I only saw this after someone pointed it out to me. Otherwise, I just blend this out- the alternative would be becoming VERY sad and upset about sexism all the time.
EDIT- on the other hand, seeing the Doctor in all these varying shower scenes is not half bad... (we had 3, 5 and 11... or am I forgetting someone?)

Otherwise, I just blend this out- the alternative would be becoming VERY sad and upset about sexism all the time. I'm honestly surprised I caught it at all. I binged through all of Classic Who my second or third year at Uni, and I was mostly watching it on one half of my PC monitor while working on other things in the other half -- stuff that didn't require too much focus, ya' know. I distinctly remember thinking I must've imagined it, and rewinding the episode a bit to double check. And... yup. It really, really undermined the character. And may have contributed to me being too skeeved out to fully appreciate Jo as a companion. I also remember quite keenly -- because it struck me at the time as a rather peculiar thought -- that it seemed "wrong" to me because I saw Jo Martin as more... grandmotherly than anything else. I'm still not sure why. This was a few years before I got into the audios, and I'm fairly certain I'd never seen Katy Maning before, so I had no contemporary images of her rattling around in my head. I just... somehow recognized her as... of my grandparents' generation, more or less. Maybe the fashion? Ah well, I dunno.mit just really, really weirded me out. Meanwhile Leela was running around in a bikini a d I scarcely even noticed.

Gonna have to go with Romana 2.Lalla's relationship with Tom bled through with the up's and downs from real life. Also in the Horns of Nimon Romana is the Doctor while he (Tom) is looning around in corridors. Also the scene in the cell in State of Decay is beautiful.
