I loved Watchers and Matthew’s prose and the use of this TARDIS team has been consistently great. I’d have preferred another writer and team for the sake of variety, as these Audio Novels feel like quite the event release for me, but am still very much looking forward to it.

At least in real terms Matthew has only contributed twice to Doctor Who in fiction and both times have been pretty sweet reads/listens. I wish the Target Storybook had an audiobook companion. Maybe with their only been six audio novels and two have featured Daleks, one has featured Cybermen and now we have a second Matthew/Adric story it's feeling a bit "claustrophobic" perhaps.
That said looking at the wider picture again the fifth Doctor, Adric, Tegan and Nyssa have only had two full length novels so far, and as my personal favourite team I want more! And it's nice to have them written by someone who was both there and hasn't written hundreds of stories already. And technically it's another six part story for the fifth Doctor. Bring it on!!

Didn’t give Watchers a look but the premise of this one greatly appeals to me.

I found getting through The Watchers a chore tbh, so not overly enthused by this. I have however pre ordersd the bundle so will get this and will give it a listen.

I'm optimistic about this.
I enjoyed watchers on my first listen, though I found it does meander a bit. Still, Matthew's prose and reading were very enjoyable.
Personally, I'm looking forward to hearing Matthew's take on Janet Fielding tearing a strip off of the Doctor for getting her to the right place and time and still managing to mess it up.

Like shellacatop, I was hoping for the broadest possible variety of authors and eras in this range, but (1) Matthew writes some magnificent prose, (2) Adric was only a supporting player last time around, (3) this TARDIS team has a fundamentally different dynamic, and (4) there could be any number of behind-the-scenes factors in bringing him back over another writer.
The range has been full of nice surprises so far (especially with the introspective, experimental tone of The Watchers). I’m looking forward to being caught off guard by this one too.

I really hope there’s some way for these to get collected and released in a hardback set, like the recent Blake’s 7 release. I loved Watchers, but I know I’d get a whole other layer being able to read the prose, absorb it better and read it at my own pace. Similar for Emancipation of the Daleks.
Plus that B7 set is a beauty; I’d love a Who equivalent!

BF don't have a license to print Who books any more, and given how Nick has said that the audio novels range is designed to be download only because that's the most cost-effective way, it seems very unlikely these are going to see any other form of release.

^ Never say never though. I have people who swore blindly we'd never get more New Adventures stories after The Dark Flame. Licenses can be renegotiated, etc.

I guess no one has finished this yet. I'm about 3/4 of the way through and I have to say, Matthew Waterhouse has outdone himself with this audio novel. I enjoyed his last one, but I'm loving this one. It has a real sense of danger for our main characters and the world of London is very well thought out. He does an excellent job with the narration, using his voice to convey not just the words but the right emotional environment, whether is be a sense of danger or mystery. Very well done.

I've just started it, and agree with your words. I will say, though, his descriptions of Tegan's intelligence are a bit harsh!

I'm curious about this one, the plot sounds interesting.
I've heard the pacing was a little slow with Watchers so I'm a little hesitant to purchase at the moment.
Can anyone tell me what the pacings like? And how much of the narrative the Doctor takes part in?

Can anyone tell me what the pacings like? And how much of the narrative the Doctor takes part in? I'd say that just as Watchers captured the measured contemplative nature of much of Series 18, this is more in line with the (so far) bright and breezy style of the Fifth Doctor's era. Also, Matthew's impressions of The Doctor and Tegan are genuinely brilliant and funny. I'd recommend this.

Wow! This was quite an intense little story. I'm always quite forgiving of this time because it was 'my time,' but even with that in mind I did feel Matthew's writing for Tegan to be on the really bitchy side throughout. It's pretty well known that, as people, Matthew and Janet don't get along, but here Matthew really lays it on thick as to Tegan's perceived shallowness and lack of intelligence. I think it does the character an injustice. Back in Logopolis Tegan accepts the evidence of her own eyes with the TARDIS and alien worlds quite quickly and when it comes to the 'bigger picture' she's there like a shot doing what needs to be done. Matthew's descriptions of her become repetitive and grating quite early on and from someone who I like as a writer I felt this was beneath him.
The rest of the story contained some really unusual world building and unique characters, especially the character of Erkbees (maybe not spelt right) and moves along at a sedate pace. Again there is a lot of repetition in the prose but the focus seems to be on London and it's issues more than the regulars. The Emperor was a sympathetic character too and played against the usual stereotypes. All in all I didn't think it was Matthew's best work but it was entertaining and I look forward to his next contribution to Big Finish whatever it may be.
