More Details on the Doctor Who MTG Set

Kinda late, but thanks to a reddit post I recently saw a presentation of the cards by lead designer Gavin Verhey

Now, full disclosure I never touched a MTG card and I probably never will but, along with the great artworks, it teased a few elements that got my fan brain thinking (making a list? how could i resist). From what I understand, all of it shall be answered on the 28th of July.

So, there will be 4 decks of cards, with all the doctors playable as the lead with a companion acting as co-leader if the player wants
* Blast from the Past (Green-White-Blue colours) focusing on the 1st to 8th doctors
* Timey-Wimey (Blue-Red-White) on 9th to 11th
* Paradox (Green-Blue-Red) on 12th and 13th
* Masters of Evil (Blue-Black-Red) on the villains, with Davros as the only lead card but the cover also shows missy, a nightmare in silver cyberman and a bronze dalek
* pieces of content from the upcoming doctors are confirmed but to be announced (gatwa's "14th" was mentionned last year btw www.dicebreaker.com/games/magic-the-gathering-game/news/magic-the-gathering-doctor-who-set-2023)

From what I understand the colour of a card basically represents their alignement as so
* Organization (white): Peace, law, structure, selflessness, equality
* Curiosity (blue): Knowledge, deceit, caution, deliberation, perfection
* Self-concern (black): Power, self-interest, death, sacrifice, uninhibitedness
* Emotion (red): Freedom, emotion, action, impulse, destruction
* Instinct (green): Nature, wildlife, connection, spirituality, tradition

Some seems to have fun guessing what would be the alignement of each doctors/companions (each doctor will have 2 colours of their deck and each companion will get 1) but that's really my thing but what we know is
* Four is blue green
* Sarah is white
* Ten is blue red
* Rose is white
* Thirteen is blue green
* Yaz is red

What got me more interested is that it will contain 10 location cards of the show with only the art to help us find what is what. Five were already shown in the post above. (if you want to try it yourself, here are the correct answers)



And each deck will contain 10 other location cards with special mechanics. Only the Library planet from series 4 has been confirmed for now.



The other funny thing is that each of the 13 doctors, plus war and fugitive, and 4 villains will get a card about one of their episodes. The only confirmed one is The Parting of the Ways for Nine.



If any of you wants to make some predictions, I would like to see it.

I’d LOVE if they “Magicified” the characters and setting and had the Doctor taking on the Phrexians

So the Barcelona panel did not introduce much that would interest the common Dr Who fan imo. It was mostly about mechanics that preexisting MTG fans can understand or collectors stuff.

The next time we get something is apparently a Las Vegas convention from the 22nd to 24th of september. Or maybe at another event on the 3rd of october. Considering the cards are released on the 13th that would not leave much time to speculate on the remaining design choices they made to represent the show.

Again I notice they are quite liberal with the spoilers so I am assuming they consider themselves talking to established fans not trying to attract MTG fans to Dr Who. For instance the River Song card properties mentions she is a "Time Lord Human". Or at least New Who fans since the host was carful not spoil who the Valeyard is.

Maybe one other thing I think is worth mentioning is which characters are playable as "main characters" (ie "Commander" cards as indicated by the "Legendary Creature" properties)
* all the Doctor incarnations, presumably including War and Fugitive (each can be combiend with a Doctor's companion including Susan, Sarah Jane, Rose and Yaz)
* valeyard (btw he is not counted as a Doctor and therefore can not be paired with a doctor companion)
* davros
* missy
* river song (she is in the 12th-13th deck surprisingly enough)
* face of boe

I know I am not the only one surprised by Boe's "ascended extra" status to coin a phrase, the host even calls him "a very iconic character". A speculation I have come upon is that it might be how they somewhat get a Captain Jack card while avoiding the BBC redtape?

It's also funny how they keep avoiding the term "jelly baby".
